Computer is a gateway desktop running Win XP SP3.
First I noted that when clicking on links from a google search, I was being re-driected, not at all times, but frequently. I started researching what the possible causes were for this, but before it got fixed, my computer came down with Windows Police Pro.
I browsed this site and found instructions for removal on another computer that is not infected. I booted the infected computer in safe mode, I already had Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but it was disabled, so I re-installed it and renamed the file per instructions - still could not run. Installed it again using different name and different directory - again could not run. Downloaded Norman Malware remover - tried to run it, it started up once, but as soon as it started scanning the process was killed and I could not longer run any executables. I then ran a fix to re-associate the exe files and tried to run it again. It started up once more, but again stopped as soon as the scanning started. I then found instructions for manual removal. I removed all files and registry entries that I could locate per the manual instructions. I still could not run Malwarebytes or Norman. Also, I found I could not AVG 8 virus scan. Tried to run a command prompt AVG 8 scan - command prompt came up, clicked scan - scan "ran" for about 3 seconds and then window closes and no report, so I believe it is being killed also. I then tried to run HijackThis to get a log to upload ... HijackThis would not run.
The computer was then rebooted into normal mode and Antivirus 2010 then started popping up. The computer was shutdown and booted into safe mode again. All malware and anitvirus programs are still disabled and cannot be run. I manually removed all files, links and registry items I could locate per the instructions for removal from this site. I am still unable to run HijackThis, Malawarebytes, Norman, or AVG. AVG acts like it is going to run, but then shutsdown. Hijackthis and Malawarebytes just do nothing when opened. When I click Norman, I get an error message stating the path to the file is invalid. In safe mode, no windows popup indicating that I still have Police Pro or Antivirus 2010, however I do not want to connect to the network or boot into regular mode until I am able to actually run some Malware removal tools. I am at a complete loss to get these removal tools running - any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
