My son's computer is slow and gives the following warning at start-up - "RUNDLL Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuleketo.dll The specified module could not be found."

About 4 months ago a similar error message came up with a different DLL file (I've misplaced the name of that file). The computer was so bad that I could only start it in Safe mode. From there I did a system restore to a previous point and got the computer up and running. My teenage son visits many questionable sites, downloads many games and programs and ignores many security warnings. Sigh. I can't tell you exactly what happened before this last error message showed up and what he has done to try and fix it.

I can tell you the following: this is an Dell XPS 200, running MS Windows XP Media Center Edition (2002) SP3. I have Zone Alarm Security Suite version 8.0.298 and it stays up to date on virus and spyware updates and scans. I do know that in the past my son has ignored warnings from ZA but I have no idea which warnings he chose to ignore.

So (1) Is this computer infected or just messed up from my son's many games and downloads? (2) Can you help me get it working properly again? (3) Is there any help for parents of teenagers?

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to BleepingComputer

So (1) Is this computer infected or just messed up from my son's many games and downloads? (2) Can you help me get it working properly again? (3) Is there any help for parents of teenagers?

1- Probably.
2- We will try our best - meaning me and the malware team.
3- YES!!!~ The will get married eventually or run away to change the world :flowers:

The process of cleaning your computer may require temporarily disabliling some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Well, that was easy . . . kind of. I did what you said, then MBAM wanted me to reboot - so I did. When my computer rebooted, I received the following error from Windows "The system has recovered from a serious error. A log of the error has been created" Then it asked me if I wanted to send the report to Microsoft, which I didn't. I had to click "Don't send report" four times before my computer would finally load. The when it finished loading, the Windows Security Center tells me that the AUtomatic Updates are turned off. Other than that it went well! Below is the log from MBAM. It appears that the computer had a few infections. Is it all fixed or do we have more to do?

Okay, I followed all the instructions, but there's one problem. After I ran SAS, it found and fixed 9 harmful items. However, when I rebooted and launched SAS again in regular windows (not SAFE mode), there is no log and no record of the scan. When the scan ended, it prompted me to reboot, so I never clicked Finish, but I did get the message that the Quanantine and Removal was Complete. Did I mess up? What next?

BTW, the Windows Security Center is still warning me that the Automatic Updates feature is turned off. Should I turn that back on or not?

On a positive note . . . Windows did not have to recover from any "serious error" and the computer is running faster. I'm grateful for little things.

The little things mean a lot sometimes

We still have a few steps to do. Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.
alternate download link
Note: The file will be randomly named (i.e. 5mkuvc4z.exe).

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on the randomly named file to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete.
  • When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

More bad news than good news this time.

First, I had to download Dr. Web CureIt from the alternate download link and it wasn't a weird name at all - it was CureIt. When I rebooted in SAFE mode under administrator I couldn't find CureIt on my desktop, so I tried SAFE mode again as non-administrator and was able to find CureIt. So I ran it from non-administrator. I hope this was okay.

Dr. Web CureIt made it through the express scan with no errors. The it began the second, longer complete scan. I hung out for about 1 1/2 hours and it was running fine. In fact it found one problem and prompted to fix it. I said ok and it continued. Then I had to go to a high school football game (a COLD football game). When I returned, I had the Blue Screen of Death which stated, "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR" and a whole bunch of technical stuff followed. You get the picture - the BLUE picture!

I was able to reboot the computer normally and Windows started up just fine.

Now what? Do I try running the Complete scan again?

Let's use an alternate scan...

Please perform a scan with Eset Onlinescan (NOD32).
(Requires Internet Explorer to work. If given the option, choose "Quarantine" instead of delete.)
Vista Users be sure to run Internet Explorer as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)
  • You will see the Terms of Use. Tick the check-box in front of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start.
  • You may receive an alert on the address bar that "This site might require the following ActiveX control...Click here to install...". Click on that alert and then Click Insall ActiveX component.
  • A new window will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" (OnlineScanner.cab)".
  • Answer Yes to install and download the ActiveX controls that allows the scan to run.
  • Click Start. (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, check: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan to start the online scan. (this could take some time to complete)[/color]
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software. Just close the window.
  • Now click Start > Run... > type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The scan results will open in Notepad.
  • Copy and paste the log results in your next reply.
Note: Some online scanners will detect existing anti-virus software and refuse to cooperate. You may have to disable the real-time protection components of your existing anti-virus and try running the scan again. If you do this, remember to turn\ them back on after you are finished.

I tried running ESET OnlineScan, but ran into a problem. When ESET tried to download the virus signature DB, I received the message "Can not get update. Is proxy configured?" I turned off my ZA anti-virus and anti-spyware, but still received the same message from ESET. Do I need to totally shut down ZA? The thought of that makes me a tad bit nervous. Could something else be running in the background that is preventing ESET from getting the virus DB? If so, how do I find the culprit? Thoughts? Ideas? I await your next instruction, Obi-Wan.

I updated and reran Malwarebytes. It found no errors.

I then tried Eset and it downloaded the signature DB and began the scan. I left it alone and when I returned the computer screen was blank. I restarted the computer and checked the Eset log. This is what I found

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK
esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=1
esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=1
esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=1
esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=1

I ran Eset again and about 50% through the scan I got the blue screen of death with the message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I rebooted my computer and received a Data Execution Prevention message that said "To help protect your computer, WIndows has closed this program - Windows Explorer"

The following is the log from the lastest Eset scan:

Please rerun SuperSntiSpyware and post the log.

Then please run:
Please download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) the file to its own folder such as C:\Gmer. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure.)
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
  • Double-click on gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "Yes" to begin the scan.
  • If not prompted, click the "Rootkit/Malware" tab.
  • On the right-side, all items to be scanned should be checked by default except for "Show All". Leave that box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
  • When the scan is finished, click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
  • Save the file as gmer.log and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
We should be close to finishing.

Also, how are things running now?

I've tried running SuperAntiSpyware in Safe mode (both as administrator and non-admin) like last time, but I keep getting the Blue Screen of Death after approximately 30 minutes and there is no log to post.

Should I still go ahead and run gmer.zip?

The computer is a bit faster and I'm not receiving any error messages, but I'm not excited about the fact that the Blue Sceen of Death keeps popping up.

Now what?

Hang in there...

Will SuperAntiSpyware run in normal mode?

Let's run two things first. Go ahead and run ATF Cleaner from the SuperAntiSpyware procedure. Then flush system restore
Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok"
  • Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Now run Gmer and post it's log.

Some bad news and some good news, but more of the latter than the former.

I tried running ATF Cleaner and SAS in normal mode but SAS gave the Blue Screen of Death(BSD) again and no log was produced.

I followed the System Restore and clean up directions and that worked just fine. Phew!

Then I ran Gmer and no BSD - wahoo! Below is the log from Gmer. What next?

The computer is running better. No DLL messages and even my son has noticed that it's faster. There are a few things that run in the background that I would like to turn off - can you help me do that? My son downloaded RegCure and Registry Mechanic that start up every time the computer boots up. How can I get rid of those from my start up and from my computer totally?

Finally, how can I be sure this doesn't happen again. I use Zone Alarm Security Suite 8.0. My firewall is set to High. Program control is set to Max. The anti-virus and anti-spyware are turned on and set to update automatically. Email protection is on. Cookie control is medium (blocks cookies from tracking site, allows cookies for personalized services), ad blocking is set to High and mobile code control is off (allows embeded objects, mime objects, scripts and java scripts). I have another year left on the ZA license so I'd like to stay with it, if I can. Is there something else I can do to protect this computer? I mean besides prohibiting my son from using it.
