Contextual information from other post. ~ OB

I believe my laptop has been infected by some virus or spyware. I continually am bombarded by a Security Center Alert that reads:

"To help protect your computer, Windows Firewall has blocked some features of this program.

Do you want to block this suspicious software?

Name: Net-Worm Win32 DipNet.d
Risk: Middle-Risk
Description: Dip.Net.d infects computers running under Windows. The worm itself is a Windows PE EXE file approximately 91KB in size, packed using UPX. The unpacked file is approximately 264 KB in size. The worm propagates by exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows LSASS (MS04-011).

Other times the Security Center Alert popup reads:

Rootkit.Win32Agent.pp
Risk: Middle-Risk
Description: This Trojan masks its presence in the system from users and from other programs. It is a Windows PE SYS file. It is 40960 bytes in size. It is not packed in any way. It is written in C.

The only option is to Cancel or Close these pop-ups. I always close them.

I also get a popup that reads:

Protection System network security alert
Network attack rejected!
Your computer is being attacked from remote host. Attack has been classified as Remote code execution attempt.
Attack from 75.230.133.36:25507. Or, Attack from 42.197.100.3:15463. Etc...

The only option is to close or Dismiss this popup. I always close them.

Other symptoms include numerous pop-ups promoting anti-spyware software and IE launching on its own, or freezing.

I've tried downloading Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, however, I am unable to complete the download. The program freezes before the download can complete.

I'm looking for some help in resolving my issues and would appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Thanks.

End of added material. ~ OB

Hello Jambob,

We will need to take this cleanup in phases. You are not clean until I tell you so - even if it appears that everything is running fine!

Let's begin....

==========

Step 1

Please save this file to your desktop.
Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) "%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r
into the "Open" box, and click OK.

When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop.
Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

==========

Step 2

Please do this:
  • Click on the Start button, then click on Run...
  • In the empty "Open:" box provided, type cmd and press Enter
    • This will launch a Command Prompt window (looks like DOS).
  • Copy the entire blue text below to the clipboard by highlighting all of it and pressing Ctrl+C (or after highlighting, right-click and select Copy).

    copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\scecli.dll C:\ /y

  • In the Command Prompt window, paste the copied text by right-clicking and selecting Paste.
  • Press Enter.When successfully, you should get this message within the Command Prompt: "1 file(s) copied"

    NOTE: If you didn't get this message, stop and tell me first. Executing The Avenger script (step #3) won't work if the file copy was not successful.
  • Exit the Command Prompt window.
==========

Step 3

:( Warning to others reading this thread!: The Avenger is a VERY POWERFUL program, and can easily be misused.
Certain misuses of this program can prevent your system from ever starting again.
For this reason, it is strongly recommended to use The Avenger only as directed and under qualified supervision.
We can accept no responsibility for damage caused by misuse of the program.
:(
  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
    Files to move:C:\scecli.dll | C:\WINDOWS\system32\scecli.dll
  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Posted Image button.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
==========

With your next post please provide:

* Win32kDiag.txt
* Avenger.txt

Hi Jambob,

Ran step 2 and went to step 3. Received error at #8 after I clicked on Execute.

Error: Invalid script. A valid script must begin with a command directive. Aborting execution!

That means you made a mistake in running Step 1 and Step 3. :(

You probably left out part of the command and it is not finding the command Files to move:

Either that our you accidently included the word "code" in box.
"Code" is not to be included. Include only the text IN the box, NOT the word "code".

Read the directions and run Step 1 and Step 3 again.
Step 2 is OK if you got the message within the Command Prompt: "1 file(s) copied"

Step 1 is not correct either, so run it again. :(
You forgot to include the two switches at the end of the command. "%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

The log should say Removing mount point

I skipped step 2 per your instructions. Tried Step 3 again. Still getting the same error: "Error: Invalid script. A valid script must begin with a command directive. Aborting execution!"

If I knew how to attach a screen capture so you can see what I entered before clicking execute - I would. Since I can't, you'll have to take my word for it that I am entering:

Files to move:C:\scecli.dll | C:\WINDOWS\system32\scecli.dll

The word Code is not in the box.

Hi Jambob ,

Good job! :( You finally got the command correct.

Now please tell me the antivirus program you have on this computer, as welll as any registry protectors (like Spybot Teatimer, Ad-Watch, Windows Defender, etc), then we will continue. :(

This is kind of embarassing, but I don't have any sort of registry protector. I've had this computer for 3 years and never had a problem until now. Sorry.

thats OK about the registry protector, it is not that important --- but what antivirus are you running?

It is the most important piece of software you can run.

That most important piece of software I can run is actually "nothing". Terrible, huh? We have a home computer that was affected and the norton did not stop it. Calling them was useless, too. We decided to run malware and that's what we use to run periodic scans, now. With this computer, we found you.

Hi... this is her husband... she does not have any anti-virus software installed on this computer. We have other computers on which we have have Norton Anti-virus and we run the Malware Bytes Anti-malware scan periodically. However, for whatever reason, she made the decision not to have any anti-virus software on this computer. She has been problem free until now.

As part of this infection, a program called Anti-Virus Pro 2010 has installed itself. I believe it is part of the infection.

Have we answsered your question?

Hi Jambob,

she does not have any anti-virus software installed on this computer.
Have we answsered your question?

Yes, that answers it.

We need to replace a file.

Please do this:
  • Click on the Start button, then click on Run...
  • In the empty "Open:" box provided, type cmd and press Enter
    • This will launch a Command Prompt window (looks like DOS).
  • Copy the entire blue text below to the clipboard by highlighting all of it and pressing Ctrl+C (or after highlighting, right-click and select Copy).

    copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\eventlog.dll C:\ /y

  • In the Command Prompt window, paste the copied text by right-clicking and selecting Paste.
  • Press Enter.When successfully, you should get this message within the Command Prompt: "1 file(s) copied"

    NOTE: If you didn't get this message, stop and tell me first. Executing The Avenger script won't work if the file copy was not successful.
  • Exit the Command Prompt window.
==========

:(
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
    Files to move:C:\eventlog.dll | C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
==========

With your next post please provide:
* Avenger.txt
