My brand new Lenovo 6075-A5U came with an 80GB hard drive and with Vista. Today I am trying to install a new WD6400AAKS 640GB hard drive with XP. When I boot into the XP CD and try to format the drive, the computer locks up and never progresses beyond 0%. If I quick format, it works. What's up with that? The machine BIOS has been updated to the latest.

As I write this post, the format has been sitting at 0% ("Setup is formatting...") for 20 minutes. The hard drive light is on, but it is not flickering. Should I wait?

Neither AHCI nor RAID is enabled, so no drivers should be required to be installed via the F6 method. (The drive being replaced is a Hitachi HDS721680PLA380, which is also a SATA 3.0 Gb/s drive.)

Formatting the long way is typically slow.

If it's a new drive, the fast format should be OK (nothing previously installed on drive).

FWIW: I don't believe the HD light should flicker when formatting...but I've been wrong before .
