Computer is acting up and unable to run malwarbytes and regicure. When I tried to run these the program shuts down. Says I don't have permission to run. I tried to uninstall and reinstall malwarbytes and same thing happens. Unable to do so.
I am now getting all kinds of pop-ups for advertisements. Tried to restart computer. Only way to start up without looping is to F8 with "last known good configuration". When start up I get "Error Loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\ritowene.dll the specific module could not be found". I am currently still able to currently access windows explorer but am fearful this will be affected too. Any suggestions will be MUCH appreciated!!

My problem sounds very similiar to other posters. I am not very versed in computer lingo or knowledge. I will try the steps mentioned.

** Update ** Just performed Steps 6 & 7 of the Preparation Guide posted by Grinler.
Was able to download both dds.scr and RootRepeal.exe to desktop. When I ran each of them, the program shuts down without a report being generated. I then try to rerun them from the desktop icon. The dds.scr will show, I hit run and then it stops. The RootRepeal does nothing when I click on the icon. I do not know what to do next....believe this is really messed up!! I appreciate your knowledge and ideas for a solution when you get time to reply. Thank you.

Hello, before we delete you HJT log post (No Log) . Try this and if successful EDIT the log into your other topic. This is to help you keeep your place in the line.
If you cannot get DDS to work, please try this instead.

Please download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You will need to run this tool while connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.
  • Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.
  • Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.
  • Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days).
  • When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.
  • Save the log file to your desktop and copy/paste the contents into a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here.
Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.
If RSIT did not work, then reply back here.

Thank you for helping boopme! I did as you asked and downloaded RSIT to my desktop, hit run and it conneceted to the scan but then shortly aborted. It was saying "listing recently downloaded.." then it stopped. I tried clicking on the desktop icon to retry and I received this message box: C:\Documents and Settings\Kim\Desktop\RSIT.exe (under this) "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this time. "

This is the similiar response I received when I tried to run Malwarebytes yesterday. It has locked me out of these type of programs. I am using Windows XP and am running as an administrator. Please let me know if there is something else to try. Thanks!!!!

Ok,Rats!! I am suspecting a dangerous rootkit.
Please try one more app.
We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the archive (If you did not use the "Direct Download" mirror).
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check only the Files box: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

My results: Primary Mirror - Error Copying File or Folder
Cannot read RootRepeal[1]: Access is denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use.
Same responsed from each of the other Direct downloads. I am saying to replace the current one I tried earlier for the desktop save.

When I try option 2 - Zip primary mirror this is what I get:The bandwidth or page view limit for this site has been exceeded and the page cannot be viewed at this time. Once the site is below the limit, it will once again begin serving as normal.

Was able to down load from Zip - 1st secondary mirror. Saved to desk top and ran. Followed your directions for files report only. Shut down as did the original one I ran at this spot while scanning - under file path showed C:\Windows\System32\eventlog.dll (something like that) and under status - lock to windows API. It stopped running after scanning C...windows/system32/fonts...

Hi this makes me almost certain you have a rootkit.
As there are some new variants of rootkits in the wild right now that will require custom scripts to remove the infection, the process must be completed by HJT team member.

Failure to follow the proper removal process can and will cause serious damage to a machine. Recovery of the machine may be difficult, if not impossible.

Now ... Download this Utility and save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the Utility to run it and and let it finish.
When it states Finished! Press any key to exit, press any key to close the program.
It will save a .txt file to your desktop automatically. Double-click on the Win32kDiag.txt file that is located on your Desktop and post the entire contents of that log as part of the reply in the topic you will create below..

Next please go here HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal ,click New Topic, give it a relevant Title and post the Rootrepeal log and the above log.

Let me know how that went.

Hi boopme!

Thank you for getting back to me. While waiting for a reply I was looking through various things on my computer. I promise I did'nt change anything!! Not sure what I am really doing, however, I just came upon this while looking through my local disk (C:), programs, rsit - I found this log-Notepad. I will post it before I try your current advise and let me know if it tells you anything and if I should proceed with your recent "utility" download.

Thank you very much!!

*** Reread earlier post from you and removed log and will do as you say with utility and post in hijack this logs. Sorry and thank you!

Hello,

I have merged your two HiJack This topics into one post. You can find it here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/255834/infected-computer-unable-to-run-malwarebytes/

Now comes the hard and frustrating part: waiting.

Now that you have posted a log, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Please be patient. It may take several days, up to two weeks perhaps less, to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.

Orange Blossom
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.
