Posted 06 September 2009 - 09:49 PM

2 nights ago I started seeing Windows Police Pro, Protection System and Security Alert System popping up. They also had me locked out task manager, Spybot and MalwareBytes. Since then the Police Pro seems to be gone, but the others are still popping up. Task manager is available now, but the security programs are not. I am also getting shortcuts to porn sites installed on my desktop. That has only happened twice, but thankfully my wife didn't see any of them :( . I have attached and posted the logs from the recommended scans. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Cliff

Good morning,
Last night when I went to bed I logged off the laptop but did not shut it down. This morning I had a new virus. Advanced Virus Remover. The entire desktop had been changed. all of the programs, files and scan reports were gone as well as my background picture. all of my personal settings have been changed. When I ran Firefox, it ran like it was the first time. None of my bookmarks are there now, as well as the quick launch buttons I had on the task bar. Windows police pro has now returned in the start menu. Protection system has also installed itself in the start menu. They had shortcut icons on the desktop as well as the 3 porn icons again.

If i find anything else new I will add it to the post.

Thanks,

Okay, forget everything from the last post. After rebooting all of the settings have returned to the way they were last night. Advanced Virus Remover hasnt shown up yet but it probably didnt just go away.

About 10 days ago I started having problems with my pc. I started getting lots of popups and fake alerts. I had tried to download a game and scanned all of the zip files with Norton before opening them, but it didn't help. Originally I could not run any anti spy software or access task manager, regedit even in safemode. After posting a topic seeking help and getting no reply, I read through some more forums and got some help from other peoples problems. I was able to change the name of Malwarebytes in the program folder and run it in safe mode. It cleaned up some of my problem, but there are problems that it can only fix on a reboot which it never does. I also cannot update it. Right now I have popups from Windows Security Center asking me to install an anti virus and from Security Alert Center. Task manager is still disabled, and I get porn shortcut icons on my desktop if I leave it connected to the internet for very long. Any help I could get would be great. I don't have ready access to a disk to reinstall my software so I would rather not have to reload. All of the recommended logs are attached.

Thanks,
cliff

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Thank you for getting back to me. The problems have not changed since I last posted. I haven't used it much since then. I still get the popups from Security Center asking me to activate their spyware program. I havn't gotten the porn icons in a little while, but I haven't had the computer connected to the internet much either. Task manager is working tonight, but there are lots of unknown processes running. I have posted the new logs, but can't think of anything that has changed since last posting.

Thanks again,
Cliff

Hi mcwinans,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already. You can subscribe by clicking the Options box to the right of your topic title and selecting Track This Topic.

  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then I will close the topic.

----------------------------------------------

You have two rootkits in the logs and from the rogue security names there may be a third. Let's check that possibility out first.

Please save this file to your desktop. Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

Thanks :(

m0le, thanks for the reply. I had quite a bit of trouble trying to get it to run. The laptop will not open any webpage. It gives me an error saying windows is blocking it for my protection. I did it all with a usb drive. Windows Police Pro is popping up every time I try to run a program and preventing me from running anything. Every time I tried to run the command it would pop up and nothing else would happen. It did not even run in safe mode so I don't have a log to post. :(
Sorry,
Thanks again,
Cliff

Can you try and run this batch file.

Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in peek.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for save as and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

@ECHO OFF
DIR /a/s C:\WINDOWS\scecli.dll C:\WINDOWS\netlogon.dll C:\WINDOWS\eventlog.dll C:\Windows\cngaudit.dll >Log.txt
START Log.txt
DEL %0

Locate the peek.bat icon on your desktop and double click it. Then copy and paste the resulting log in your next reply.

Thanks for the log. :(

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Please then run MBAM afterwards.

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Then please run OTL, a scanner which gives a better idea of your PC then DDS.

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL By OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:[list]
    OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Let me know first if you encounter problems running Combofix, MBAM or OTL. Thanks.

m0le,
Just wanted to check before I continued. Conmbofix will not run unless in safe mode. When I try to run it in Safe Mode it says that my Norton 360 is still running. When I try to open Norton to turn it off, it says that it doesn't run in safe mode and doesn't give me the option of turning it on or off. I tried just uninstalling it, but I couldn't do that either. I also tried going to add remove programs from the control panel but that didn't work either. Should I go ahead and run Combo Fix with it telling me that Norton is running?

Thanks,
Cliff

We want no antiviruses/antispywares running.

Please use Symantec's uninstaller to remove Norton. This can be safely reinstalled after the fix.

m0le,
The removal tool starts to run and then gives me a message that says that the removal tool is not a valid win32 application and shuts down. I tried to delete the program from the program files, but it doesn't remove it all because it says that is is running. I still can't run the add/remove program in the control panel even in safe mode. I'm feeling stuck and not sure what to do next.

Thanks again,
Cliff

Let's try another method.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

We need to execute an OTM script
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :Files
    c:\docume~1\alluse~1\applic~1\13029844
    c:\windows\system32\mndisk.sys
    C:\bhSYn.bat
    c:\windows\system32\clbcate.dll
    c:\windows\temp\~1B.dll
    c:\windows\system32\certstore.dat
    c:\windows\system32\18467.exe
    c:\windows\system32\41.exe
    c:\windows\system32\ecsufpkovkvects.exe
    c:\windows\egnrd1837.exe
    c:\windows\jrqc01022.exe
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{2414a739-9651-441b-bc10-d773267cc19d}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7b459cee-431f-4389-979b-a750cc8e4fc8}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{BF56A325-23F2-42AD-F4E4-00AAC39CAA53}]
    :Services
    mndisk
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
  • Push the large Posted Image button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
Post the OTM log.

Then please attempt to run Combofix in normal mode. If this fails then try and run MBAM.

Thanks. :(
