A few days ago, Spybot indicated my laptop (runs VISTA) was infected with Virtumonde.dll. I had spybot "fix" the issue, and subsequent spybot scans have come up clean, or only showed the usual adware. I also ran MBAM scans (version 1.4) and they were fine. While the computer seems to be running better in general since the issue was fixed, I am still getting some popups in internet explorer. Do you think its possible that there are bits of Virtumonde still lurking somewhere? I'm concerned because from reading some of the posts on here, this one seems hard to get rid of.

Hello it os quite possible. We need a couple of things ..
The last MBAM log...
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

Also if Teatimer in Spybot is on..
We need to disable Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer"
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  • Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  • Click Posted Image and then on "Advanced Mode"
    Posted Image
  • You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Uncheck this checkbox:
    Posted Image
  • Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

Next run ATF and SAS:
Note.. SAS doesn't open the registry hives for other user accounts on the system, so scans should be done from each user account.

Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

From your regular user account..
Download Attribune's ATF Cleaner and then SUPERAntiSpyware , Free Home Version. Save both to desktop ..
DO NOT run yet.
Open SUPER from icon and install and Update it
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining
.
Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program. DO NOT run yet.

Now reboot into Safe Mode: How to enter safe mode(XP)
Using the F8 Method
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode
.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox or Opera browser click that browser at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program
.

NOW Scan with SUPER
Open from the desktop icon or the program Files list
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
Perform a Complete scan. After scan,Verify they are all checked.
Click OK on the summary screen to quarantine all found items.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log.
A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
Click Close to exit the program.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I just ran a new MBAM scan and here's the log. Not sure if what you wanted was the MBAM scans from right before or after Spybot found Virtumonde. If you would prefer that, let me know.

Tea Timer was disabled a while back, but I will uncheck the SD helper box too (as per step 7). I'll download ATF and SAS and do the rest shortly.

not sure if it matters, but on ATF, "prefetch(disabled)" was greyed out, but I did select all and empty selected.

Wow! SAS found 157 items of adware for main user. Here's the log. I also ran for 2nd account as per your note, and it found 20, I'll post that shortly.

not sure if it matters, but on ATF, "prefetch(disabled)" was greyed out

Tabs for applications that are not installed are grayed out.
The Prefetch cleaning feature has been disabled for Windows Vista Users.

While attempting to open IE in other user area to post the 2nd log, I got a box that said "this add on caused IE to stop responding or to crash" and something to the effect that "HP website add-on version 2.15.7.0 published by HP not compatible with IE8", and gave some options of what to do: check on line for a solution and IE will help fix, run with add on disabled, or run anyway which may cause the computer to crash. This does not happen for main user, which is where I'm back to now...and when I attempt to copy and paste the other log here, I can only paste the last thing I copied in this user area, which is the log I already posted!

Is it ok for me to search on line for a solution now, or should I just run with add on disabled, so I can post that log? That log indicated that there were no memory or registry threats detected, but 20 file items (adware) found. Don't want to get too sidetracked, but we've had periodic issues with the HP printer for this laptop. It reinstalled itself numerous times. Now I'm wondering if that's related to the virtumonde issue, or just an HP problem that needs to be addressed.

Another issue I just noticed: I have AOL and all of my mail folders and all saved mail on my computer have disappeared. Gone. Everything was there yesterday. How do I get this back? I am assuming this issue is related to either something I just did or virtumonde. But if you would prefer I start a separate thread on this, let me know. thank you!

I thought I'd circle back to let you know that since my last post, I ran SAS several times in safe mode for both users and have finally gotten reports showing zero detections for both. Should I do anything else at this point, or do you think I'm good here?

Also, is it possible for me to restore my emails? I noticed they were gone right after I ran ATF and SAS for the first time, so I'm surmising its something one of those did.

thank you for your assistance!

Hello you PC looks clean now. I cannot see how ATF could erase your emails as it doesn't look at them. That said what version and AOL program is this and perhaps I can help you find them.
