sounds may be ok now, but sometimes it doesnt work

my friend's laptop has a problem with it's sound. sometimes it works but sometimes it doesnt work. she has to make the laptop on "sleep mode" and switch it on to make the sound work. then if she turns off the laptop and on it again, the sounds dont work anymore... please help...

the laptop is a sony vaio.. with processor of intel® core ™2 duo.. the sound is not on mute, by the way..

the laptop was ordered online. im not sure with the serial number though.. but that's the model itself... sony viao PCG-5G3L
