So, I've been having problems with my DVD drive lately in my Dell Inspiron 1720. When I try to burn a CD it usually doesn't write anything to the disc (but still makes it unusable afterwards). Also, sometimes won't read discs.

What steps should I take to resolve this issue?

I would uninstall/reinstall whatever software you are using to burn.

It won't read any type of disk? Music, operating system, burned, commercially acquired?

Have you checked Event Viewer for possible applicable errors noted?
