I discovered this Java program on my list of downloaded programs. It's very large, 117 MB and I'm not sure if I actually need it. This is a new computer and I don't remember downloading it. Could anyone tell me what this does and whether or not I need to keep it ??

Thanks !

It is probably being used to support a Java based program.

JRE is used by Mozilla and Firefox, as well as many other applications and web pages using Javascript, a cross-platform programming language. Retain it, and keep alert for updates.
