Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Thank you for your time and patience. These are the problems:

Non-stop internet activity when connected.
Local university wouldn’t accept emails due to blacklist by uri.black.com
When closing down, Windows says; “Ending process – n”

Here's the log - and I have attached 'attach.txt' as 7-zip. I see that the log mentions Comodo. I did install this some time ago, but later uninstalled it, and it does not appear the control panel list of programs.

Best wishes.

Hello.

Try running a scan with RootRepeal now. If it doesn't work, try running GMER...

Download and run RootRepeal CR

Please download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip the RootRepeal.zip file it to it's own folder. (If you did not use the "Direct Download" mirror to download RootRepeal).
  • Close/Disable all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.
  • Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.
  • Double-click on RootRepeal.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, please right-click and run as Administrator...
  • Click the Posted Image tab at the bottom.
  • Now press the Posted Image button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside All Seven options/scan area
    Posted Image
  • Now click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button. Posted Image
  • Save it as RepealScan and save it to your desktop
  • Reconnect to the internet.
  • Post the contents of that log in your reply please.
If RootRepeal doesn't work...

Download and Run Scan with GMER

We will use GMER to scan for rootkits. This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop. Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • When you have done this, close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program. Right-click and select Run As Administrator... if you are using Vista
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it detects rootkit activity, you will receive a prompt (refer below) to run a full scan. Click NO..
    Posted Image
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Please UNCHECK the following:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Registry
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show all (Don't miss this one!)
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

If GMER doesn't work in Normal Mode try running it in Safe Mode

Note: Do Not run any program while GMER is running
*Note*: Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any actions on "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

Hi Extremeboy - thanks for taking this on.
RootRepeal hung while initialising, so I used GMER. Here are the contents of the logfile:

Best wishes

Hello.

Run a scan with Combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix

Note to readers of this post other than the starter of this thread:
ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool which should NOT BE USED without guidance of an expert.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2

Please refer to this page for full instructions on how to run ComboFix.
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click ComboFix.exe to start the program. Agree to the prompts.
  • When ComboFix is finished, a log report (C:\ComboFix.txt) will open. Post back with it.
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.

ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 48 hours please feel free to send me a PM.

The help you receive here is always free but if you wish to show your appreciation, you may wish to Posted Image.

Hi Extremeboy,
I'm attaching the combofix log. I had a problem in that I couldn't get rid of ThreatFire, so I let ComboFix carry on and kept my fingers crossed. Windows has since managed to close quickly, with no mention of 'n' needing to be ended.
Best wishes

Hello Extremeboy,
Since my last posting which suggested that n had gone, I have opened and closed the pc again, and the old message has returned - 'End Program - n this program is not responding. The only change I had made to the system was to activate TeaTimer again.
Best wishes

Hello.

Please scan this file...

Submit File to Online Scanner

There is a file that I would like you to check out for me using VirusTotal/VirSCAN
  • Open VirusTotal Online Scanner or VirSCAN. If one site is busy or down, try the other
  • At the top of the page you'll see a box. Browse to the following Files.
  • c:\windows\system32\ssdds.scr
  • Click Submit.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Copy Scanner Results into your next reply.
Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

For complete or visual instructions on installing and running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware please read this link

Take a new DDS run afterward and post back with both the DDS and Attach logs in your next reply.

Thanks.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Hello.

Please manually delete this file:

c:\windows\system32\ssdds.scr <- This file.

--

Re-run scan with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Your MBAM log shows "No action taken". This usually occurs if you forget to click "Remove Selected" and instead only clicked "Save Logfile. Please read this thread and rescan again only using the (Quick Scan) in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. After performing the new scan, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

Update Java to Version 6 Update 16

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 16.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Run ESET Online Scan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
You can refer to this animation by neomage if needed.

Take a new DDS run afterward and post back with both the DDS and Attach logs in your next reply. Also, let me know how your computer is running and if you have any more problems, issues or symptoms left.

Thanks.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 48 hours please feel free to send me a PM.

The help you receive here is always free but if you wish to show your appreciation, you may wish to Posted Image.

Hi ExtremeBoy,

1 ssdds.scr deleted as requested.

2 Here's the new MBAM log. What happened the first time was that I saved it before removing selected - fearing I would be taken to another screen and not have the chance to save.

3 I had a problem installing Java - the Error 25099 one, but used the work around that was recommended.

4 ESET Online Scan - this would appear to nail it:

Some leftover things we still can take care of.

May I know the current condition of your machine? How is it running? Any problems/symptoms?

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Dear Extremeboy,

Thanks for all your help.

Does the ESET report, with its reference to a trojan and a worm - Fraud.AG trojan and Win32/Sobig.F worm unable to clean - mean that my pc is now virus free?

I see that DDS says that Threatfire and Comodo are enabled. Threatfire never shows itself, it doesn’t appear on the Windows Change or Remove list, and I couldn’t uninstall it using System Mechanic either. Comodo I tried out a while ago, but found the learning curve pretty steep, and thought I had uninstalled it. Are these two programs really still there beavering away?

As far as I can gather all is as well as can be expected for a pretty clogged up and busy machine. Clearly I need to do some pruning and clutter clearing. Shutting down is very much quicker than before, and generally things like Word97, Firefox and Thunderbird seem to working smoothly. However, ever since suspecting that I was unwittingly part of a botnet I work offline for most of the time, only going online in short bursts. Start up is slow, though.

How can I be sure that I am not still infected? I keep the security programs updated, I avoid porn, I don't click on urls in emails, and am generally very suspicious.

For the future - If I keep Zone Alarm going will it conflict with SpyBot's TeaTimer? Shall I just stay with these two programs, and use others like Ad-Aware on say, a weekly one-off basis?
I also had Desktop Maestro, which monitored changes but didn't do anything about them.

Can I now resume installing and uninstalling programs?

Best wishes

Hello.

We weren't quite done yet, but I was just asking the condition of your machine to see if you have any more problems/symptoms left before we continue. It was getting late yesterday as well, so I just decided to ask you a question and then continue with the rest tomorrow.

Regarding to some of your questions...

Does the ESET report, with its reference to a trojan and a worm - Fraud.AG trojan and Win32/Sobig.F worm unable to clean - mean that my pc is now virus free?

No. ESET reported "unable to clean" so probably it was not deleted. We will deal with that shortly.

I see that DDS says that Threatfire and Comodo are enabled.

Those programs are indeed gone but some services are left and it did not remove itself from the Windows Management Instrumental and therefore reports in the DDS log as it uses that service to report certain things.

However, ever since suspecting that I was unwittingly part of a botnet I work offline for most of the time, only going online in short bursts. Start up is slow, though.

We can see if we can help on that a bit.

How can I be sure that I am not still infected? I keep the security programs updated, I avoid porn, I don't click on urls in emails, and am generally very suspicious.

I will give you some prevention tips once we're done and I give you my final speech.

For the future - If I keep Zone Alarm going will it conflict with SpyBot's TeaTimer? Shall I just stay with these two programs, and use others like Ad-Aware on say, a weekly one-off basis?

I personally don't recommend Spybot or Ad-Aware anymore. I suggest you uninstall it. If you would like to know why I'll explain it in my next post. If you do wish to keep them, Zone Alarm and Spybot + Ad-Aware should not conflict. You don't have quite a lot of RAM (memory) on your system so I don't suggest you keep several real-time protection that are not necessary on your system for better performance. Malwarebytes is a better alternative.

I also had Desktop Maestro, which monitored changes but didn't do anything about them.

If you wish to keep it then you may, if not then of course you can uninstall it.

Can I now resume installing and uninstalling programs?

Wait a bit more and we should be done soon, and then you can begin to modify your system do changes etc... once I give you the final speech.

Now... let's continue...

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\default\i75eiyiw.slt\Mail\inmail.f2s.com\Trash <- In your ThunderBird Profile Mail in the Trash folder I would believe there is infected files. I suggest you look in there and delete any suspicious or uneeded files. Please be careful with attachments and other web links.

C:\Migrated Folders\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\DOCUCURR\Oldmessages\Deleted Items.dbx <- This file, seems to be a backup. If you don't need it, I suggest you delete it.

Download and Run StartupLite

This program will identify startup entries that are unnecessary to be started at bootup. This will help free some memory.
  • Download StartupLite.exe by MalwareBytes to your desktop.
  • Double click on StartUpLite.exe to run it. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select Run As Administrator.
  • A list of unecessary startup entries will be compiled.
  • Take a read at the description of each and for most of them you probably won't need it please make sure there is a checkmark next to Disable.
  • Leave all the items as Disabled and click Continue.
Download and Run OTM
  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
