I seem to be having similar problems to 'adam bell' and 'aurorapc'.First noticed that Google searches throwing up irrelevat results and sometimes there seemed to be a split second when the legitimate Google page was being overlaid with the spoof page. Could not find a reason for this and assumed it was a change by google so selected page 2 of each search to get relevant search pages. Ran Spybot - Search and destroy a few times and Registry Mechanic.
Later in the first week AVG found 7 infections (Trojan Horse, but, there is no record of this in the AVG log for some strange reason); a pop up box supposedly from AVG asked for permission to force removal or allow? then the real problems started.

I ran Hyjack This and pasted the results into www.hijackthis.de and deleted one entry stated as dangeroud, one empty fie and one marked as not necessary.

Searched web for help and downloaded a few what seemed legitimate removal progs but think they might have all been the same and they would come up with 748 problems but will only fix 15 for free. Deleted these in 'Add/Remove'.

On 25th Aug. AVG dealt with:"C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe (780)";"Trojan horse SHeur2.AYQL";"Reboot is required to finish the action""C:\WINDOWS\system32\winmm64.dll";"Trojan horse SHeur2.AYQL";"Moved to Virus Vault""C:\WINDOWS\system32\winmm64.dll";"Trojan horse SHeur2.AYQL";"Moved to Virus Vault "The ongoing problems are:Google searches throw up first and second page as false content.
On Startup a windows message box appears with "this application has failed to start because msmlpk.dll was not found re-installing the application may fix this problem". This box appears with 29 various items in the header of the box before windows loads.Firefox (my default browser) will not run by any means, neither will some other programmes, Internet explorer will however run after various message boxes as above.
Other functions are not working within Microsoft Outlook.I suspect that my attempts so far have possibly made things worse so I do hope you will be able to advise me, I have limited knowlege about these things.

Many thanks to you.Posted below are the dds, attach, ark.DDS

Hello and :( to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here
.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay
.

-----------------------------------------------------------

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Kind regards
Net_Surfer

Thank you Net_Surfer, you help is much appreciated and I fully understand the mamoth task keeping up with request from forumites like myself.

The situation on my PC has not significantly changed except updates from AVG and some automatic Microsoft updates, one update that the PC will not allow is:
Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB973923)
This update fails every time.
e-mails will download in Microsoft Outlook but none can be sent, similarly no links within e-mails will allow me to copy and paste or link through to the target of the link.
There seems to have been an update of Internet Explorer which seems to have solved the Google search problem but I cannot be completely sure. Firefox is still blocked as is the rest of programmes except Microsoft Word.

I think that is all the changes I can think of.

I have tried to refrain from using the PC where possible.

One thing I forgot to mention in the original post was that the XP restore points were all blocked or dissabled, if that is significant.

When I ran the DDS script I had to continually delete the pop up boxes about this missing msmlpk.dll and there were many of them.

Here is the update of the DDS log.

Once again thank you.

Hello Kevin E :( Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. Sorry about your wait, but I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system from here on out.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are performing the clean-up. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

I need to get a little different look at your system so please perform the following:

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Please do not post any logs as an attachment unless asked to do so.

Thanks,

You're welcome, let's do the following next:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Instruction can be found HERE
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. Please note: Kaspersky requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) be installed before scanning for malware, as ActiveX is no longer being used.)

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Open the Kaspersky WebScanner
    page.
  • Click on the Posted Image button on the main page.
  • The program will launch and fill in the Information section on the left.
  • Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press the Posted Image button.
  • The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files. It may take a while so please be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the files have been downloaded, click on the Posted Image ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the Posted Image button, if you made any changes.
  • Now under the Scan section on the left:

    Select My Computer
  • The program will now start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • In the drop down box labeled Files of type change the type to Text file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis if needed.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

Here are the results of the Kaspersky online scan and the RSIT log.txt & info.txt

One observation though, following the instructions for Kaspersky, I could not find anything like the 'settings' button or any way to set the scan other than to select options including 'My Computer', could it be that they had changed the function? Another point to note was that a box appeared followed by a second to state that the update had failed because of interuption of the connection which I do not think was correct; it did however eventually go on to scan after three attempts, hope it is OK.

Regards,

I have just tried to open various programmes that I could not open before like Microsoft Office progs and Firefox, they all open. Everything seems faster as well but that might be my imagination?

I hardly ever use other than Firefox as my browser because I thought it was safer and now I prefer the way it works better than MS, is it safer or is this not correct?

If the PC is now clear, is there any clue as to how this occured in the first place? :(

Do you think it will now be safe to use for transactions?

I really do appreciate your help on this, in the past problems like this have meant a trip to a local dealer and re-format the disc, that seems to be the limit of the local tallent here. I am so glad that my search for this msmlpk.dll led me to this forum. :(

Thanks for the kind words, I am glad I could help you out.

There is always controversy when it comes to using computers which have been infected for personal transactions and it is kind of a hard question to give a definitive answer on. I came here because I was severely infected a few years ago and I have never reformatted my computer. I use it for all of my personal business and have never had any problems. I would say it is a good idea to change your passwords on a regular basis and if you suspect anything out of the way to stop until you have it checked out.

As far as how you got infected I am not really sure. This can come about through something so simple as clicking on the wrong link on a site you visit on regular basis or outdated programs which have not been patched being exploited. One of the programs you need to update is Adobe and we can take care of that now. Let me know when you have finished.

Please uninstall older version of Adobe Reader before installing the latest version

* Click Start
* Control Panel
* Double clicking on Add/Remove Programs
* Locate older version of Adobe Reader and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it
* Click HERE to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
* Select your Windows version and click onDownload. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you. If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
* Close your Internet browser and open it again.

Have removed old Adobe reader and installed new version, tried it on files stored in PC and works OK.

If I get a box display from AVG and it asks to allow forced removal of a virus, could this be a spoof message and what should my action be? A friend of mine claims that it is probably not genuine and to pull the plug on the PC, is this correct because this did occur after the Google screw up and it did seem to be the start of the big troubles.

Should I subscribe to the full version of AVG or is there better protection ?

many thanks.

If AVG is giving you warnings they should be genuine if you have reenabled it. Can you tell me exactly what the warning says?

Sorry, I am misleading you, the AVG box asking if I wanted to force removal was before the PC screwed up, all seems working well (touch wood) at the moment thanks to your help.

Kevin.
