Hi,

Recently I know I got infected with PC Antivirus 2010 as I started to get the pop up for it. I tried going into safe mode and running Malwarebytes, Spybot and Symantec but whenever I tried to run those programs I would receive the message, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I tried Kapersky recovery disc and it deleted some files, but still couldn't load Malwarebytes, Spybot or Symantec. I even tried renaming Malwarebytes but it would close after 2 seconds of scanning. I eventually took out my hard drive and gave it to my friend to scan with Malwarebytes and AVG and it deleted some files. When I reinstalled my harddrive I still got the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." This time I was able to rename Malwarebytes and run that. Before it would run and close after two seconds. After running Malwarebytes with a new .exe name it deleted some virues. But again I still couldn't scan with spybot, malwarebytes and symantec. I used Combofix as I read some people who had the problems I did and had some success with it. It deleted some files too, I posted this log after the HJT log. Even after running combofix I still got "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Then I downloaded HJT and was able to get a log file, previously I wasn't able to. Please help with suggestions on fixing the problem. Malwarebytes currently doesn't find anything when I do a scan but I still believe there's some malware on my computer. As I can't run Malwarebytes, spybot, or symantec, only Malwarebytes if I rename the .exe.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Currently I can only run MBAM. My Symantec Anti-Virus is disabled. I can't run any of those programs and get the error, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I was able to delete some stuff using MBAM and combofix, but I believe I still may have a problem like a rootkit.

Hi DoubleJ29,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum and sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

Note: We don't recommend using ComboFix without the supervision of a trained helper.

This is a new rootkit and needs special approach. Please don't run any scans until we are done. I need two more posts to get all the programs to run.
  • Download Win32kDiag from any of the following locations and save it On the D drive. We need to run the tool with the following command to fix some malware related changes.

Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bold text) into the "Open" box, and click OK:

    "d:\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

  • Go to start > Run copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK.

    cmd /c dir /a/s "d:\beep.sys" >log.txt&log.txt&del log.txt

A command window opens. Wait until a log.txt file opens. Please post the content to your reply.

Finished!

The other task said "File Not Found"

Volume in drive D has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 40D7-09E1

I believe I may have deleted that beep.sys file when a scanner found malware on it...

Good. :thumbup2:
  • Delete you copy of ComboFix from your desktop and download the latest ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

  • We need to scan the system with this special tool.
    • Please download Junction.zip and save it.
    • Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
    • Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:

      cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste or attach the content of it.

I'm actually having a problem running combofix. It loads up and I select YES on the disclaimer, but nothing happens after that. Not sure if it's a problem with Symantec. I click and disable "Enable Auto-Protect" and a red cross shows that it's turned off, but a few seconds later it disappears, so I believe it turns back on. I can't open symantec Antivirus either...

We are going to unlock some programs. But please don't run those programs yet. You should be able to run Norton and disable it.
  • We need to reset the permissions altered by the malware on some files.
    • Download this tool and save it to the desktop: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/...xes/Inherit.exe
    • Go to Start => Run => Copy and paste the first line of the following lines in the run box and click OK:

      "%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "d:\Program Files\Enigma Software Group\SpyHunter\SpyHunter3.exe"
      "%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "d:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\109172720109.exe"
      "%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "d:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\984163613984.exe"
      "%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "d:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe"
      "%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "d:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\VPC32.exe"
      "%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "d:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe"

    • If you get a security warning select Run.
    • You will get a "Finish" popup. Click OK.
    • Do the same for the rest of the lines until you have run all the above commands one by one.
  • Delete your copy of ComboFix. Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts. If needed let it reboot.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt.
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

I renamed it Combo-Fix.exe and it still seems to stall after selecting YES at the disclaimer. Also having the same issue of disabling Symantec but then it seems to turn back on a few seconds later. Not sure if that's effecting it. The weird thing was I was able to run it before, like when I first posted my problem.

  • Go to start > Run. Copy and paste the following line in the run box and press Enter.

    cmd /c copy d:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\eventlog.dll d:\ /y & dir /a d:\eventlog.dll >log.txt&log.txt

A text file opens up. If you see eventlog.dll is mentioned on the open text file copy and paste the content to your reply. In case you don't see it tell me before you proceed.

  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.

    Files to move:
    d:\eventlog.dll | d:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Posted Image button.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot.  Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

I just edited the previous post as I realized your system drive is D. Please redo the fixes again if you have already gone so far to do it.

We will take care of could not find error later on.

Could it be that you run Avenger twice? And this is the log of the second run? If you run it twice it is okay.

Go to start > Run copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK.

cmd /c dir /a/s "%systemdrive%\eventlog.dll" >log.txt&log.txt

A command window opens. Wait until a log.txt file opens. Please post the content to your reply.
