I have something bad on my computer. I hope you can help and I hope I haven’t gone too far already. Details thus:

Windows XP Operating System.

Timeline:
1 Downloaded movie clip file (about 6m) from internet
2 Double clicked on that file to run it.
3 “Blue screen of death” – instant restart as per my computer settings
4 computer unstable, desktop unstable, safe mode stuff
5 Google has “changed” different fonts, links go to advertising sites, etc
6 Many “Google Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close... – send error report” warnings, weather or not on internet. At first I click send, but soon begin clicking "don't send" because I cannot trust where or what is being sent.
7 run AVG; can a few threats including Cryptor but not remove
8 Download Malwarebytes, difficulty installing, but eventually can get it to work
9 Malwarebytes detects more threats than AVG and apparently removes most of them, but not all.
10 Download SUPERAntiSpyware – difficulty running but cannot remove remaining threats either
11 Now using previously installed Safari browser rather than Internet Explorer 8
12 computer much more stable, but still getting same “Google Installer” warnings, but less frequently.
13 Also, starting up the computer remains unreliable since that “blue screen of death”, often stalling during start up, so I turn off computer at power point and start again.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the response.

Original problem still remains, with AVG and Malwarebytes detecting Cryptor virus, files, etc (or whatever they actually are) but being unable to remove them. Files as requested below

Current computer behaviour:
  • Computer start-ups are more reliable nowadays, with only the occasional freezing upon the desktop starting up.
  • Once the desktop has finished opening (with all my files, folders, background, etc) I get two warning messages. The Google Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. as well as a similar message regarding Internet Explorer I click dont send to both.
  • I have now been using Safari rather than Internet Explorer (IE) as the Google Installer warnings still occur but less frequently than when I used IE. But they always occur whenever I use the computer, weather Im connected to the internet or not.
  • Computer occasionally freezes during operation: screen freeze, task manager isn't accessible, the only way to get the computer running again is to press the reset button on the computer box.
  • Also, when Im connected to the internet, the computer will sometimes play seemingly random audio files such as advertisements or music which I have not deliberately downloaded.
DDS file as requested. Thanks again...

Update on computer behaviour:
I've just been reminded that the computer will only start "properly" with my Window XP disc in my DVD drive. If it is not in the drive the start up tends to hang once my desktop appears. Sometimes it stops with what looks like a coffee cup icon in the "tray" next to the clock in the bottom right of my screen, otherwise, it just stops somewhere about that point in the start up.

The last time it did it, I was able to open the DVD drive, insert the disk, and the start up completed.

Hello archi,

Sorry for the delay, forum have been really busy.

1. Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case LimeWire 5.1.2).

These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

2. Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Hello archi,

1. We need to execute a ComboFix script. (Tutorials on how to disable your anti virus and anti malware programs can be found HERE.)

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

File::
c:\documents and settings\Admin\Local Settings\Application Data\prvlcl.dat
c:\windows\system32\drivers\iqwsx.sys

DDS::
BHO: {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - No File

Driver::
hldy

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2. Please open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Go to update tab and download all updates then go to scanner tab and perform a full scan. Please post the MBAM log when you reply.

3. Lastly, please create a new DDS log and post it also when you reply.

Hello archi,

There's no more sign of malware on your log but let's make sure. :thumbup2:

1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

2. Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply .

Hi,

You have a clean logs. You are now good to go. :thumbup2:

1. Let's clean your Java cache directory.
  • Please click start > control panel > Java.
  • Then go to General tab and click on settings under Temporary internet files.
  • Click delete files and press ok.

2. Let's do some housekeeping.
Uninstall ComboFix

  • Click on Start Menu, then click Run.
  • Copy and paste the code below and hit enter.

ComboFix /u

Posted Image

Uninstalling ComboFix will do the following:
  • Delete ComboFix and its components from your computer.
  • Delete other tools commonly used during the malware removal process.
  • Resets clock settings to standard format.
  • Re-hides file extensions and hidden/system files.
  • Clears System Restore cache and creates new restore point.

3. Download TFC to your desktop (TFC only cleans temp folders. It will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies).

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder.

  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean
Note: TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

4. Your Log is Clean, please take the time to read below to secure your machine and take the necessary steps to keep it Clean :)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates
It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
