Posted 25 August 2009 - 01:01 AM

Trying to sterilize a co-workers personal notebook (Inspiron B130). I've run mbam and sas, disabled dodgy looking startup items and BHOs in IE, disabled System Restore to delete infected restore files, removed dodgy/useless programs in Add/Remove, including the long expired trial McAfee bundleware and installed ZoneAlarm and AVG Free. Also updated her Firefox to the latest version, although I think NoScript would baffle her so have left that out.

This has stopped the automatic resume download/install of Internet Security Deluxe popup that always started upon bootup and sped up the notebook's performance noticeably. However, Google search results are still redirecting to Crawler meta-search page.

I've followed advice on these boards left for other posters, when working on other computers and had great results, but this is my first time posting logs and requesting help. I hope I've followed the instructions correctly and look forward to hearing from those more skilled and knowledgeable folk.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

I posted a DDS log with the original request. In order to post a second one, I would have to get the computer back from my co-worker. I couldn't very well just hold onto it for weeks as it's her only computer and people get nervy when you D/C their internet IV drip.

If analysis of the logs I already posted indicates a need for further scans/diagnostics, this would justify my requesting further time with her computer. I can tell you that it's likely that no further diagnostic or corrective actions have been implemented since I posted. She's probably only used it for purse shopping and browsing DeviantArt.

Multiple scans of Mbam, Super AntiSpyware, Panda and AVG all came up clean before I released it to her, and the browser redirect to Crawler seemed to have stopped. An analysis of the original logs I posted would help greatly to confirm or dispel the presence of any lingering nasties.

I appreciate your time and am very aware of how busy you must be. You perform a wonderful service, of benefit to many, and are to be commended for the philanthropic ideal which you help to carry on.

Thank you!

Hello.

Sorry for the delay.

That last few logs didn't show too much in terms of any infections active but there are few things including maintenance as well as some other "dead" entries of leftovers that can be still removed. Java needs to be updated etc...

Overall however, just by looking at the DDS logs it looks fine. However, I can't confirm that the computer is free from all infections or any other infections without doing any further scans or tools. From what you have described in your last post however, things looks okay as none of the anti-virus/malware scanners didn't detect anything.

Hope that helps a bit.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
