Gentlemen...Ladies...

I've been here before...you were nothing short of Magicians with my previous 'ReDirect' problem...and I've got it again, only more so!

Along with a ReDirect malware, I've also inherited 'Windows Antivirus Pro' ! (these people should be killed!) I can't open ANY programs at all..you've probably heard that symptom before. I can't open HJT for your perusal as well.

I do have simple directions that show me how to delete WinAntiPro...by deleting it and svchast.exe from the Task manager, but neither one of them appear there, so I went no further.

I would have run all the programs that you've had me download in the past by now, but like HJT, I can open nothing.

I cannot open any programs at all...not in safe mode either. Clicking on a program brings up the "Open With" box.

I cannot open "Add or Remove Programs" in the control panel. It also brings up the 'open with' box.
The 'antivirus' program asks me for money every now and again.

Please help....

Seconded... and all the years taken off their lives need to be added onto the crew helping us here. They need them, with all the time they spend. *genuflects*

There might be a repair tool out there that can start your rescue, so don't give up hope quite yet.

Good luck - Straythe

It's a bad one
You need to submit a HJT log. Since you can't run one, try this instead

Please download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You will need to run this tool while connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.
  • Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.
  • Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.
  • Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days).
  • When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.
  • Save the log file to your desktop and copy/paste the contents into a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here.
Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.
If RSIT did not work, then reply back here.

Hi, Garmanma!

Yeah, it's a bad one alright! I was able to download RSIT but am unable to run it! I cannot open any programs! When I double click on it RSIT (or any other program) the "Open With" dialog box opens up.

Try renaming the file extension from .exe to .scr or .com

If that doesn't work try this:

Please download runscanner.zip and save to your desktop.
  • Create a new folder on your hard drive called Runscanner (C:\Runscanner) and extract (unzip) the file there.
(click here if you're not sure how to do this.)
  • Double-click Runscanner.exe to launch.
  • Select Beginner mode and click Ok.
  • Select Do a full scan and save a log file (default is Full Scan) to start.
  • Please be patient and do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When the scan is complete, a window will open asking you to save runscanner.run. Click Cancel.
  • Another window will open asking you to save runscanner.log.
  • Save it to your desktop and "Save as type: Runscanner log file [*.log].
  • The log file will automatically open in Notepad.
  • Go to the top menu, click on "Format" and uncheck "Word Wrap" if checked.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log file into a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here.
  • Exit Runscanner when done.
Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run. If Runscanner did not work, then reply back here.

I have the same problem via Windows Police Pro. I wasn't able to use any exe files, however I found that I could get around the exe problem.

1. Right click on the program you wish to use (in my case it was hijackthis).

2. Go to Run As

3. Go down to The Following User and select administrator.

4. Type in your password and run the program.

At least that's been working for me insofar as running exe files. Still don't know how to get rid of the malware though. But it's made it so I can make a hijackthis log.

Hello, and thank you.

I did start my own thread on this, I just posted the above as a suggestion to temporarily work around the inability to get exe files to work.
