Wall unit? Do you mean modem or router or switch?

What type?

Ok, got it now.

A couple of things to try.

1 Disable then enable the network device.

If that does not work,

2 Uninstall then restart the PC. Let Windows find and reinstall it. Be aware you may need the driver for the device so if you do not have it on a CD be sure you have Internet access to get it.

Is the name something like "local area connection 2"? Normal and not a problem.

Sorry to say it would seem you may have a bad ethernet port. Meaning a hardware issue non-software related.

How many connections are reflected for your system? If more than one, delete all except the one that is being used and which functions correctly.

Control Panel/Network & Internet/Network Connections.

My connection used to be called something like LAN 2, but now its is called local area connection 4.. not sure why... i also have two additional connections, one wireless, and the other is called 1394 connection, it says conected, firewalled, 1394 net adapter.. i looked that up but didn't find any useful data... i'm not sure what that is... about the bad Ethernet port... thing is, it used to work.. i dunno

also, i can't delete the 1394 connection

Every time the ethernet device is uninstalled\reinstalled Windows still remembers the other times it existed. Thus the 1,2,3,4 after the name.

The 1394 is a fire wire connection which is not a concern at this point.

The "wireless" simply means that your PC has wireless network capability.

Lets be sure you have the right driver. What is the model of your Dell?

Go HERE.

On the bottom of you lap top should be a sticker with a "service tag" number. Enter it in the field. Then check for the right driver for your NIC = network interface card.
