Hello,

This is my first post on bleepingcomputer.com. I look forward to any support on this issue.

My computer has been having svchost errors for about 2-3 years now. I have not been able to find the cause. When the error occures my system attmemptes to reboot. If I abort the reboot I notice many things in windows don't work. Most notably the ability to drag icon's on my desktop. There are other GUI dysfunctions but none are as notable.

I searched this issue in expertsexchange.com and found a link to ComboFix.exe. I ran in according to instructions thinking it would fix the problem but found it is more of a tool to collect data for me to post here.

I appreciate anything you can tell me about what might be causing this crash.

While I wait for a response I am going to try this fix. http://www.pchell.com/support/svchosterror.shtml

ComboFix logs should not to be posted outside the HijackThis forums. It is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Please create a new topic explaining the nature of your problem in the Am I infected? What do I do? forum. Describe pop-ups and system tray or desktop icons that have appeared. Explain what is "going wrong" with your computer. Note any tools you have used and their respective results.

If needed, we will direct you to our HJT Preparation Guide.

Thank you for using BleepingComputer as your malware removal source.

I will have a moderator close this topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Have you been able to determine which instance of svchost is causing this crash? As you may know, there is always more than one svchost.exe process running at any given time, and each one controls various processes. Knowing which process is crashing might help to narrow things down as to what is the source of the issue. You can use Process Explorer to see into each svchost process to see what's going on behind the scenes.

Download the program HERE.
I would never ask a person to do something that I wouldn't do myself.

I did not know that process explorer told you what each svchost does. Will monitor what are open and see which one crashes. Very good feedback. Thank you.

Yes, it does. When you open the program, you simply move the cursor icon over each svchost.exe instance and it displays what's inside.

Just documented all svchost.exe processes running. Now lets see which one crashes. (this could take days as it does not always happen)

OK, keep us posted.

On a side note, are your updates working OK for Windows? Do you do this manually or do you allow Windows to run that for you?

I usually allow windows to perform updates but sometimes manually visit update.windows.com to make sure it is up to date. I occasionally find that my system requires updates so I guess the automatic updates are not functioning quite as well as I would like. They are set to run daily at 3am.
