Hello,

I have had a problem recently that I hope you all can help with. Here is a history of the Problem:

Running windows XP pro Sp 2
Dell Dimension DXP061
Intel Core 2 CPO
6420 @ 2.13 Ghz
2 GB Ram

In the past week I have had two redirects while clicking on google search result links while using Firefox
redirected site is an online scan with popup saying pc is infected and requesting to run scans
the sites looked different both times
First time I navigated away from the page successfully and popups disappeared
Ran scans with mcafee, malwarebytes.,and windows malicious software removal tool (most recent)
detected nothing
Second time browser locked..killed the browser with TM..needed reboot to get browser to navigate away from page
OS would not shut down had to kill power
on reboot windows indicated it had recovered from a serious error
ran same scans again...nothing detected
installed Spyware doctor..rebooted
on shutdown got blue screen with memory dump message
physical address 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0x000007d0, 0xba507b38, 0xba507834)
on reboot again recovered from serious error
ran spyware doctor found some tracking cookies and several low and medium threat nasties on desktop and external drive (believe these are probably false positives but removed them anyway)
I have not tried to duplicate the redirect since
today I noticed my third party backup software is not running correctly
tried to back up files manually but cannot copy several files because they are in use
ntuser.reg is one the other is something in one local settings temp file
ran spyware doctor again and found backdoor.IRC!.ct in c:system volume restore
file has been quarantined by SD
this is the second time this has been detected..the first time it was a legitimate .exe on my desktop (see above)
which I let SD remove

otherwise machine appears to be running normally

after posting this the next 2 reboots were normal with no errors..although my backup software is still not running properly

I could not run root repeal..."error invalid PE image found"

I don't see anything out the ordinary here but I fear I may be missing something

I would like to run chkdsk /r and reinstall my backup software

is this the appropriate next step?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
