Application Updates opens Blank Screen in IE8

Whenever I have any program open and choose "check for updates" IE8 only opens a blank screen. Any idea's why this happening?

Windows XP Pro sp3
1.5 gb Ram

Maybe an add-on. Try running without addons and see if that makes a difference. If it does, then add the addons back, one at a time until you find the problem one. Run Internet Explorer 8 in No Add-ons mode

I discovered why. Safari had recently downloaded an update and made itself the defualt browser. When I changed that feature in it hyperlinked pages starting coming up as they should.
