I have a dell dimension 8400. Whenever I turn it on it will first go to a black screen displaying this:
G84 p402 SKU 001 VGA BIOS
Version 60.84.58.00.61
Copyright © 1996-2006 Nvidia Corp.
256 MB RAM

It displays some stuff about my graphics card which is a XFX Geforce 8600 GT 256 MB. When I first turn my computer on it will go to this screen and then it will stay there. I can only shut it down from the back through the extension cord's switch. After restarting it, sometimes after going to the black screen it will go to the dell screen. Other times, i have to repeat this process multiple times before it loads past the black screen. I was wondering if anyone knew how I can fix this. I can still use my computer, but it's a very annoying process doing this every single time.

Here's some info on my computer:

Dell Inc.
Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.20GHz
1534MB RAM
Hard Drive: 156 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
OS: Windows XP Home Edition, SP3

Have you made any changes to your system since the problem started?

If you feel comfortable doing so, maybe flashing the BIOS would solve the problem.

the black screen only started appearing after i installed my new graphics card. i use to have a nvidia geforce 6800 gt. how can u flash the bios? i pressed f2 but nothing worked. i tried pressing a lot of key combos: ctrl + alt +del, del, esc, f2, f8, f12, enter, backspace, etc. but i think my keyboard is useless when its frozen like that.

<<It displays some stuff about my graphics card...>>

It might help to know what that might be.

Have you tried reinstalling the old card...to see if it's a problem related to the new card...or another problem?

thats everything it displays. well i didnt have this black screen with the old card, i havent tried putting the old card back in. ill try and do that soon.

edit: put the old card back in, no black screen booted up fine. put the new card in black screen again, but this time it didn't freeze. hopefully it won't freeze anymore. freezed again, then i tried disconnecting my usb devices and it said diskette failure so i turned off the floppy drive and then took usb devices off the boot menu. this is the first time since restarting and it worked. we'll see what happens.
