Hello everyone! About a week or so ago i downloaded a virus through AIM accidently. When i downloaded the virus (called focous-funny.exe) Norton blocked it from having internet accsess. I then ran a sweep with Norton but it found nothing, so i ran ad-aware and it found a trojan with i think 12 traces, then i ran spy sweeper and microsofts anti spyware programe but neither found anything. Today i was looking at my startup items using spysweeper and i noticed something called "stratas" and its excuitable is "xmconfig.exe" there is three entries for it. I googles xmconfig.exe and it dosnt sound nice from what i have read but none of my programs are reporting any problems when i run so i hope you guys can help. Here is my HijackThis log.

After reviewing your log, I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can hide malware from us when we are performing a fix, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on Start, then Run, and type msconfig and then press Enter. When the window opens you should be on the General tab. Click on the Normal Startup item. Then press ok until you are out of the program. It will ask you to reboot so reboot normally.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it here as a reply. I will review it when it comes in.

I did not see signs of the infection that you were describing in your first post. The infection would be indicated in the HiJackThis log by entries like these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xmconfig.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stratas] xmconfig.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [stratas] xmconfig.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [stratas] xmconfig.exe

And the problems you would be having with your computer would be
# Turns off anti-virus applications
# Allows others to access the computer
# Modifies data on the computer
# Deletes files off the computer
# Steals information

The name of the infection is W32/Sdbot-AAZ which is a network worm with backdoor Trojan functionality for the Windows platform and spreads through network shares and can be instructed to send itself through the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) application.

Since you are not having any of the above problems and the only place you have seen this is in the Spysweeper start up files, I suggest that you check your startup files by typing msconfig in the run section under Start. If you see the stratas xmconfig.exe there in the startup section, make sure that it is not checked to run. Another way to make sure that it is not in your startup, download EasyCleaner from HERE. In this program, you will see a startup section that will allow you to view your startup items and delete one if necessary.

Your log was the first log that I have seen with so many O18 entries. When I checked with some of the other HJT Team Members, this is what they said.

I always suggest the user to uninstall it, because logitech desktop messenger is responsible for a system slowdown and can cause errors also.. seen that enough.

Bobbi Flekman said:

I always leave them alone... I've encountered them many times, and never did the problem go away with these O18's. They are a nuisance, but they are a part of the way Logitech talks.

I always have the user go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it first before running any malware utilities if they don't want it installed.

Logitech® Desktop Messenger (LDM) is a free service designed to deliver software support, news and information you can use. LDM ensures that you have simple, speedy, and effortless access to product upgrades, technology tips, and technology news and offers that are relevant to you. LDM delivers information right to your desktop, allowing you to take advantage of all of the advanced features of the Logitech products you own, while staying abreast of new computer-related product and service developments (Logitech and otherwise) that are applicable to your life.

OldTimer said:

Actually if you look at them they are not exactly the same. This is just my opinion because I haven't heard a reasonable explanation for it but I believe that with the LDM backweb service it creates a new, unique protocol service everytime you start the machine. Why it can't use the same one over I don't know.

I usually just leave them in because I want to see if they get to a certain point and then start over at the beginning again.

Maybe someone who knows more about the LDM backweb srevice can explain exactly why it is doing that.

So the decision is up to you.

I would recommend that you fix one entry in your HiJackThis Log and in order to do this you will need to do:

1. First Option.

You have one (or more) of these programs running on your machine and that is good.

Microsoft Ant-Spyware Real Time Protection
SpySweeper

But while we do the next part of the fix for your problems, it(they) will complain and give you the option of cancelling the changes we are doing with HiJackThis.

When they do, please allow those changes to be made or the problem lines will not be removed from your HiJackThis log.

2. Second Option.

Disable the program(s) while you do the fix in HiJackThis.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
  • Click on "Security Agents Status".
  • Click on "Disable real-time protection".
Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
  • Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
  • Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
  • Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
  • Click the Save button.
Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may prevent the removal of some entries. You can enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >Program Options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll (file missing)

If you are still uneasy, there are several online virus scanners such as:

TrendMicro Housecall

Panda ActiveScan

BitDefender

and several trojan programs which have free trial versions:

TrojanHunter

a2 Scanner

Trojan Remover

Ewido

If you decide to do these, when you have completed the scans, if you get a report of files that can’t be cleaned / deleted, please write down the filenames and locations and post that in your reply.
Please post a new HiJackThis Log.

I downloaded the a-squared scanner and ran an update and a scan and it found nothing. I also fixed the the thing in red you told me to fix. However after I ran the scan with a-squared i tryed to start firefox but a-squared gave me two warning's one saying possible backdoor behaviour detected and the second said possible LAN bypass backdoor or spyware detected and that i should terminate the program and run a scan if i didnt trust the program i was trying to run (firefox). since I had just run a sweep i figured it was a false warning. I also uninstalled microsoft antispyware because it would not update; everytime i updated i would check to make sure by trying to update again and it would say it was downloading the new update even though i had already done it. As long as it is safe to delete all the things that start with 018 I will i dont think i need them but wanted to make sure it was safe first. Here is my new HijackThis log.

The way I understand the Logitech\Desktop Messenger, it is not necessary to have the program to use the products. If you want to get rid of the O18 entries, you would need to uninstall it via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.

Please go to the following web addresses and Download Cleanup HERE Install CleanUp and run it. After it is finished cleaning, it will tell you the amount of disk space that has been freed. Click on close and it will ask you to restart.

CleanUp! is a powerful and easy-to-use application that removes temporary files created while surfing the web, empties the Recycle Bin, deletes files from your temporary folders and more.

If you decide to uninstall the Logitech\Desktop Messenger and if you would like me to look at another HiJackThis log. do a new scan and post it here.

Your log appears to be clean. Please advise me of any problems you still have.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to disable and enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
