Hi,
For weeks now my cursor has a mind of its own. I will be typing and all of a sudden I will be typing in the middle of a previous sentence. Sometimes it's worse than at other times and it is VERY frustrating. I'm constantly backspacing to take the letters out from where they don't belong and put the cursor back where it belongs. Any ideas on what's wrong? I would very much appreciate help.
Linda

Is this a laptop or a hand held mouse?

It's a laptop and a hand held mouse. I don't think it's the mouse because it's happening while I'm typing.

I should also mention that I have changed my mouse during the time this was happening with my cursor because my mom's mouse died so it's a different mouse and I'm still having the problem of my cursor jumping all over the place. Anyone???

Does anyone have any suggestions on why my cursor is all over the place?

There can be any number of possible reasons for this behavior.

Check if your laptop keys are not stuck. Turn off Fn keys if they are enabled.

Hi Romeo,
Can you explain to me what you mean by my laptop's keys being stuck? I'm going to type a sentence below to show you what happens when the cursor goes crazy. Of course, it doesn't happen all the time and I never know when it's going to happen so I'll have to keep trying until it does. Well, it happened and it's below. lol Normally, I would backspace and remove what has been inserted and then put the cursor back where it belongs. I know it has nothing to do with the mouse because I've unplugged my mouse and it still happens and I've also used another mouse.

Sometimes when you press a key on your keyboard it doesn't spring up like it should normally. It gets stuck in the pressed state. If you are typing and your Home key is stuck, then your cursor might keep jumping back to the start of the line. This may happen for many other keys like arrow keys etc.

Check if no key is stuck. Check if the keyboard cable is good. If your keyboard came with a driver, then try re-installing it.

I don't have any stuck keys, Romeo. If I did, I would have mentioned that, for sure. Any other suggestions? I don't know how to reinstall a driver. Can you tell me what I'm looking for to download? I don't know where the keyboard cable is. There is only one cable and that's the power cable.

Hi Samuel,
I mentioned above that I have already tried a new mouse, as well as no mouse at all and just the touch pad and it still happens.

Sorry I forgot you have laptop, of course you don't have keyboard cable.

Did you turn off Tapping when typing in Control Panel.
Go to Control Panel -> Mouse > Tapping and check Tap off when typing box. Save settings. See if it works.

If this happens during MS Word usage only, its a bug in MS Word.

Hi Romeo,
It happens whether I'm in my mail or on the web. I don't type enough in Microsoft Word to even know if it happens there. I guess I should have mentioned that I have Windows Vista so that screen shot doesn't apply. I looked up the mouse in my control panel and there is nothing about "tapping." I love your cat picture. lol

Hi Linda, sorry I was mixed up in XP and Vista sections of this forum. I have updated the picture in previous post.

Also if you have Synaptics touchpad, you can try installing latest driver from here : http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers

If you know the model and make of your laptop, you should visit the website of your laptop's manufacturer for latest drivers (you will find it in support section)

Hi Romeo,
My mouse properties don't look like the screen shot you posted. This is mine. I will check out the support section for a driver but this computer is only about four months old. Would it be likely that I would need a new driver??
