My ThinkPad T400 has been freezing up lately and I have narrowed it down to the CD/DVD drive. When I remove the drive, everything works fine. When I slide it back in the computer freezes. The other strange thing is that the device is no longer listed under Device Manager. It was there but now it's gone. I'm running XP Pro v2002 SP3.

The problem with reality is the lack of background music

That is not uncommon. I had a client's HP hang because of the CD drive.

If one is available, try a different one. They run about $50 for one that will burn DL DVDs.

Good luck.
