IT started off with Cryptor and then seemed to be TDSS.

Hi. I am trying to help my friend clean this virus off his laptop. It's a dell inspiron 1501. I have followed several suggestions throughout many different help sites but still have something on the laptop. Currently, it appears to be hijacking my internet searches. When typing anything in the search bars, I get directed to a 'try again' connecting web page that says internet is not connected. But it is. When typing into the address bar directly, I am taken to the sites.

I have done the DDR and root repeal logs. Also have run Malwarebytes and superantispyware programs. DDR and Rootrepeal logs are here:

DDR attach log attached.

Other DDR log:

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Thanks for replying. Apologies for my delay in response back. Here is the new DDS log, the one to post, not the one to zip and attach. ( I am not sure how to zip it, btw.)

PROBLEM is: still have these weird 'hidden' files reported back from AVIRA scan (or MBAM? can't recall which one). I believe there was a rootkit on the laptop so I am leary that it is truly all gone now, just because I followed some of the other threads advice... (which I shouldn't have, i know) and finally was able to get online and was able to download some spyware, namely, AVIRA and Superantispyware. I uninstalled AVG free, btw. I just want someone to look at the logs, etc. and make sure the rootkit, virus thingy is all gone. Running the rootrepeal brought up hidden services as well that look like a virus.

The one problem still having, but may not be virus related, but a setting is that I can't do any searches from any search engine. I can enter websites directly into the address bar, but a search will bring back a message that I'm not connected to the internet.

Thank you in advance. :thumbup2:

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you.

I definately see signs of infection.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with ComboFix and other tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. If you have already run ComboFix, delete your old copy and download a new one.
Link 1, Link 2, Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted ImagePosted Image

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted Image
  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Please then take a new log with RootRepeal.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Posted ImageBackdoor Threat
I'm sorry to say that your computer was infected with one or more backdoor trojans.

This means that sensitive information could have been stolen. I would advise to change any passwords for any accounts that you have accessed with the infected computer using a clean computer ASAP. If you have used this computer for banking, I would strongly suggest that you report the possible stolen information. Please do not use the computer for any further transactions, or to enter any other information, if at all possible, until it is declared clean.

You may want to read this article on how to handle identity theft.
You may also want to read this article regarding preventing of identity theft.

This computer can still be cleaned, however, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% safe even after disinfection.

Please read When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall.

I will proceed assuming you wish to disinfect. If you want to do a reinstall, reply back saying so.

Run ComboFix with CFScript
We will run ComboFix again with a script.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open notepad (Start>Run>"notepad") and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:
    Registry::
    [HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
    "%windir%\\system32\\drivers\\svchost.exe"=-

    Driver::
    akcsz
    XDva193
    XDva219
    XDva277
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe. (This should be your desktop.)
    Posted Image
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Post back with that log.

Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Update Java to Version 6 Update 16
Your current version of Java is outdated. Malware creators can exploit the lesser security of older versions. Please uninstall your current version through Add/Remove Programs. Remove all instances of Java, J2SE Runtime, Java Runtime, and Java Runtime Environment. Restart your computer after uninstalling.

Please download the installer here. Choose "Windows".

Delete the installer after use.

Run Scan with Kaspersky
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select Run as administrator to perform this scan.
  • Please disable your realtime protection software before proceeding. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open the Kaspersky Scanner page.
  • Click on Accept and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select Critical Areas.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

This scanner will only scan. It does not remove any malware it finds.

Any problems at the moment?

With Regards,
The Panda

Well that is not what i wanted to hear. I am inclined to do a reformat reinstall, but do not have any OEM disks for win xp, etc. The laptop was brand new, maybe about 2 1/2 years old. If there were cd's that came with it, i do not now where they are as we have moved since i got it.
Basically, i do not store sensitive informaton on this laptop, but it does have an automatic wireless connection and i have accessed my bank and have purchased things with my debit card using this laptop.

I am now concerned about two other things since the situation appears to be grave. 1) This morning, i could not get the wireless connection to work again after doing the combofix and rootrepeal. So, to expedite information to you, i copied the reports to a thumb drive and used my desktop computer to post those reports here at bleepingcomputer. Is my desktop now at risk, via the thumb drive? 2) I have a lot of photos stored on the laptop, how can i be sure i don't transfer the backdoor virus via a storage device. I guess that's sort of the same as question 1.

I await your answer to this storage question. If I do decide to do a reinstall, etc... do i need the xp disks or a new copy of xp? (I would guess so.) I may decide to just have it used for games and music and homework, but no senstive information whatsoever in future, in which case I woudl go ahead and 'clean' it as best we can.

I really really appreciate your help.

Hello.

1) This morning, i could not get the wireless connection to work again after doing the combofix and rootrepeal.

When ComboFix runs, it disables the connections. Sometimes, it does not re-enable them successfully.

Please follow the directions here on restoring the connection.

2) I have a lot of photos stored on the laptop, how can i be sure i don't transfer the backdoor virus via a storage device. I guess that's sort of the same as question 1.

Plug the drive into a clean computer. Then, run FlashDisinfector.

In any case, the infection is not currently active.
  • Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

If I do decide to do a reinstall, etc... do i need the xp disks or a new copy of xp? (I would guess so.)

If you can find the OEM key on the computer, then you will only need the disks. Otherwise, you will need a new lisence too.

With Regards,
The Panda

Thank you Panda for your help. We have decided to disinfect and we will not use the laptop for any sensitive information, etc... I will be doing the disinfection thus far described on Friday, as that will be first time I will have. I will post back the log, etc. as requested. I just wanted you to know I am still here. :thumbup2:

Alrighty, done with current instructions. Couple of things... in case it matters. A family member used the computer after I did the combofix but before I ran Kasperasky. (used it online to play their online game..they didn't realize i was in the middle of disinfecting.

Here's the logs:

Hello.

The logs look clean. Unless there are any issues at the moment, we can wrap up.

Uninstall ComboFix
Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Click on your Start Menu, then Run....
  • Now type the following into the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the "x" and "/".
    ComboFix /u

Uninstalling ComboFix will do the following:
  • Delete ComboFix and its components from your computer.
  • Delete other tools commonly used during the malware removal process.
  • Resets clock settings to standard format.
  • Hides file extensions and hidden/system files.
  • Clears System Restore cache and creates new restore point.
Please re-enable any antimalware programs that were disabled during the fix.

Preventing Malware Infection in the Future
Please take some time to look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections: For general slowness problems that you may have, take a look at Slow Computer/browser? It May Not Be Malware. Read How to use the Startup Database to identify and disable uneeded processes and increase the amount of available resources.

Do you have any questions or concerns?

With Regards,
The Panda
