Hi,

My cousin complained back in April (2009) that her computer was running slow and having various problems. I am the geekiest geek she know so she called me for help. The computer is an ACER with a system restore partition. If you guys can't help, I'll reinstall the OS from this partition.

I instructed her download malwarebytes and run it. It did ok but still had problems so I told her how to boot into safe mode and run it. She did this twice in a row. The application went from report over 100 problems to 5. After running the computer would work great for a couple of days. Everytime she noticed problems coming in she would run malwarebytes again in safe mode.

She recently told me that even though it finds and removes lots of stuff it never ever comes up 100% clean. There are always a few files left. The MBAM log states it will delete these files on reboot but never does.

It's been almost 1/2 a year and she asked me to take the computer home to do some deeper cleaning. What I found is that she has been running mbam every few days but she never updated the definition file. Nor has she been allowing the windows patches to install.

I updated MBAM and caught the system up on all it's patches. I installed spybot search and destroy and ran it. It found items and corrected.

I disabled several BHO including "Crawler Toolbar".

What I've got left is a file called at.dll and 6 registry keys the MBAM says it will delete but doesn't. When I try to delete any of them I get an access denied error. I tried changing permissions but that didn't work so I tried taking ownership of the file and registry keys and I get the same error. I rebooted into safe mode as administrator and tried again without success. I cannot take ownership and I cannot delete. I even tried taking ownership of the system32 directory and propagating that change through all sub-objects. No luck.

Finally, I booted with a linux live CD, mounted the drive and deleted the at.dll file. But I can't edit the registry through linux (that I know of).

I've often read these HJT threads when trying to do my own cleaning but now I am stuck. Not sure how to delete these registry keys and finish cleaning the computer for whatever it is infected with. Also just notice I never emptied the %temp% directory and MBAM is reporting a rootkit file in there called npidhffh.dat. It will not delete (access denied) will need to use linux again but I will WAIT until told to do so by you guys.

A few other things I did are run Microsoft regclean 4.1a and the registry option in cclearner.

I know you don't ask for an MBAM log but here is the last one I ran before deleting the at.dll file in linux:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
