Missing pictures & graphic from My Pictures

HI!! Sure hope someone can help me with this. I am missing pictures and graphics from the My Pictures file in Windows XP. Some are downloaded pictures of me..that I had a folder for, now just one of them out of I think 4 are left. Now some cute pics someone sent me are also gone, were seperate and not in any folder, just in My Pictures.
I cannot locate these anywhere and do not want to lose any more of my pictures!
I need to know why this may be going on, what to do to stop it and what I need to do to prevent any reoccurances. I havent a clue and hope somebody else does!

Hi have you gone to the search wizard and click on pictures music and video put name of what is missing and click if they are there it will find them ,if not then go to all files and folders and search local drive,

Try it i hope you have some luck.
Now installed Microsoft Security Essencials on my Tower with Windows Home Premium 32bit and Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop with Windows Home Premium 64bit
