Posted 13 August 2009 - 11:36 PM

On 8/11 I was online when all of a sudden my computer was attacked. I have an up-to-date version of Norton AV 2009 and it blocked Trojan.Malscript!html (blocked this twice) and Backdoor.Tidserv. It removed "y.exy detected by SONAR". I then closed my browser and I had a pop up along with the red warning in the task tray stating that "Attention! System detected a potential hazard (TrojanSPM/LX) on your computer......." I when to click out of it and it did open a browser window which I promptly closed. I then ran Malwarebytes (which I already had installed on my computer). This seemed to find and remove everything. Although I re-ran Malwarebytes again shortly after that scan and it found one more file. My computer seemed to be fine and nothing seemed to be affected after that, but I know these things can get in the system. Today, 8/13, my Norton found and removed Trojan.Fakeavalert so now I am getting concerned that there still may be something on the computer (I had run several full Norton scans after this and it did not find anything until today). All Malwarebytes scans lately have been clean.

The following is my DDS log from today (8/13):

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
regards,
schrauber

Thank you. The only thing I have recently experienced is that my Norton would not load properly and I had to uninstall and reinstall it (Norton AV 2009). Otherwise, I have not experienced anything in the last week, however my concern is that there is still something lingering as I found some virus several days after I thought all of them were caught. The following is my updated DDS Log:

Hi EMN7,

Looks like a clean DDS log but we need to check out some other options before we call it clean.

First though

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Next let's do the scans

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.

    First Location
    Second Location
    Third Location

  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all seven boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.
Then

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Finally, a check for remnants and other rubbish

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
Any problems running any of these programs then please stop and post back letting me know what has happened. :thumbup2:

Thanks m0le, I appreciate your assistance. I have removed the Viewpoint Manager and I have run Malwarebytes (which I had on my computer since day one). MBAM came back with a clean report. On RootRepeal, how long should this take? It seems to go very slow and I can barely move my mouse. I have a Core Duo w/ 4 GB of RAM so I know my computer is fairly up to date. The RootRepeal seemed to be taking hours and I eventually had to stop it to access my computer. Any insight? Thanks!

Hi EMN7,

It shouldn't be taking hours so there may be something blocking it. We'll try another scanner and see if that can run. Let me know if it does the same as RootRepeal.
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop, please rename it as gamer.exe.
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Thanks :thumbup2:

Unfortunately I am not able to fully scan my computer with this. It starts fine but gets hung up and Windows pops up a message saying it has to shutdown the program or I get a blue screen. I made sure my anti-virus is fully turned off as well as my firewall and spyware program (Ad aware). Is there another one out there? Thanks again for your help!

Okay let's try this.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop but rename it Combo-Fix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi m0le - thanks for your patience. I ran Combo Fix and it scanned my computer and saw it deleted two things. It automatically restarted my computer and it didn't prompt me to save the log. This might have something to do with the fact that it caused a conflict with my network adapter and I was not able to connect to the internet. I had to reinstall the network drivers and then I was able to reconnect (although I still have exclamation point under network adapters in the device manager - WAN Miniport has three entries w/ exclamation points). Should I try to run Combo Fix again?

Combofix may have saved the log.

Please go to Start >Run > and copy/paste the following, then press Enter

C:\QooBox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A log file should open. Please post that in your next reply.

No such luck - sorry. I actually ran Combo Fix after I got infected (read the forums here intially) I have a log from then, but none from yesterday. I could send that log, but I'm assuming we want a recent snapshot of what's going on. Sorry that this is dragging on. Thanks again.

PS - My firewall now catches a file called chcp.com - is this safe to run? Seems like it loaded after I ran Combo Fix this time.

Okay, the chcp.com file is connected to a password recovery tool. It's a safe file.

Please run Combofix again then and let's hope we get a log to look at. :thumbup2:

I re-ran it and had no problems with the execution of it - but it did not create a log. It rebooted my computer and didn't see anything when I came back. I went to the Qoobox folder and it didn't have the new log (just the ones from a while back). Should I uninstall and reinstall? Thanks.

Yes, make sure you are downloading from this source.

If we still don't get a log I will contact one of the developers.
