I was having some trouble with one of my PCs, hard drive access way too much. I found that there were 2 instances of Firefox.exe in task manager. Research indicated that this may have been spyware. This system was not critical and I wanted to make changes to it anyway so I just removed it from the network and wiped the drive. The interesting thing happened when I connected another PC that I was not having any trouble with to the port in my router that the troublesome PC had been. After leaving it on over night the new PC started running so slow that the mouse cursor would stop for several seconds and then shoot off across the screen. I also noticed that I had 2 additional gigs free on the hard drive that I did not have the day before. There was only one restore point with yesterdays date on it yet I had not done anything to make one and the following day there was still only one with a new date on it. I then disconnected this computer from the network. I already had Mailwarebytes and HijackThis installed but when I tried to run them I would get BSOD with the message "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" (Running rootkit revealer gives the same BSOD message). I uninstalled and used the mailwarebytes cleaner, then reinstalled and would still crash. After about the fourth reinstall I finally got to save a log from HijackThis (and then I find out that we are using something else). The computer with the trouble is currently off line and awaiting troubleshooting. I am using yet another PC to post this.
The DDS text files were made with everything in my task bar shut down that I could shut down, hope thats OK.
Question1: could someone have gotten my IP from the infection on the old PC and then gained access to the new PC when I connected it to the same port?
Question2: what makes dds.scr different/better that hijackthis?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
