I have an older LG HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-42518 and a brand new Sony DVD RW DRU-120A and I can't play a dvd or record on one. I tried unplugging them and then plugging them back in and restarting computer and they still don't know what a dvd disk is. Troubleshooting says both are working properly and cds are no problem. But if I go to "my computer" and click on properties of either, the general tab says nothing about them.

Were you able to play DVDs before?

What program did you use to play them?

Always had cds. When we tried a dvd in the old one (bought it cheap from a friend), it didn't work so we thought was broken. It still does cds ok. Anyway we bought the Sony DVD and now we find it won't play or record dvds either
We tried Nero. It's confusing.

It sounds like you do not have a proper program, or perhaps the codecs to play DVDs with.

Go HERE and I would suggest downloading the Full version.

Install it. You should be all set.

Well, I downloaded it and tried to install it but got an error:

"Error opening http://download.filesharingplace.be/klr/Co.../avipreview.exe
The server returned status code 502"

They provide several mirrors to download from. Try another.

Okay. I tried all the files from all the mirrors and the drives still can't see a dvd disk. A disk that has things burned onto it is seen as a cd, not a dvd.
But at least now it will play a movie DVD. I keep getting the message to put in a disk after I insert a blank dvd, though.
I think next time we buy a computer it'll be a Mac.

I hope you uninstalled each prior to installing a new one.

A disk that has things burned onto it is seen as a cd, not a dvd.

Are these data files? Are you able to access them? Depending on the burning program you used to burn them and the capacity of the disk (around 650 to 700MB) used it might be seen as a CD. A lot of burning programs do not auto-detect the format and you need to select the type of disk, CD\DVD you are using.

But at least now it will play a movie DVD. I keep getting the message to put in a disk after I insert a blank dvd, though.

If it is seeing and playing DVDs then I must be misunderstanding the problem.

Well, I don't know what to say. It plays pre-recorded dvds now (a little improvement) but has no idea what a blank dvd is. Perhaps there is a way to format a dvd before trying to burn like there used to be for cds?

Sorry, have never used either program to burn with.

Most programs will either auto-detect the disk format or you have to choose\tell it whether it is a CD or DVD from somewhere with-in the program.

Well, this is the link you first gave me http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

If you don't use Windows Media player which one do you use?
