I know you said no starcraft, but what about warcraft 3? I've been playing it for 5.5 years now, and I still enjoy it from time to time. People are constantly coming out with new custom games so you never get sick of the same game over and over.

Have you considered the Age of Empires Series? I personally am a fan of Age of Mythology. It's a pretty old game, still fun.

I own pretty much everything of AoE except for third expansion (does one exist?) and I find it to be pretty non-replayable, although AoM is pretty cool but I don't know where to find the disc, I play it at my friend's house sometimes.

Till date:
AOE 1: Core + Expansion
AOE 2: Core + Expansion
AOM: Core + Expansion
AOE 3: Core... and there's where I left it. I never really liked the third game as much. Not after I played AOM.

the third had no difficulty... but im still looking for a game lol, been playing disciples to pass the boredom (the undead's dracolich kicks everythings ass =) ) but its getting repetitive, just building up an army and wiping random stuff out with it...

How about the Civilization series? Or, Europa Universalis III or Europa Universalis: Rome? Maybe, Alpha Centauri (basically Civilization on another planet, it's not a space 4X)? Or Casear IV or Simcity 4? I liked Sid Meier's Pirates! You can also try Anno 1404: Dawn of Discovery.

nice job rattling those off, it'll take me about 2 maybe 3 days to bash through those demos (hopefully ill find one on each) and ill let you know

but, first off, the ones ive played: SMP! was pretty good until it got boring, Civ4 kept crashing on my computer, still play simcity 4, and I never got SMAC to work (though it was pirated)

so, ill reply after I test demos, thanks!

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is pretty basic (will run on almost any computer) but a lot of fun. HOMM2 is just as much fun, but requires a bit of fiddling to get going (it was originally DOS-based).
Command and Conquer is the grand-daddy of RTS

Depending on how old of a computer you're talking, Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm (and possibly Homeworld 2 if you have a newer computer) were very fun for me to play. The only thing is that there isn't really a multiplayer community as there were only two playable armies in each game, however the campaign was pretty imaginative (especially in the first one), the gameplay was fun, and at the time, the games were very pretty.
