Got a second hand pooter. A Hewlet Pckard Pavilion.
I'm running XP and it shuts down fine but the power supply will not shut off.
She who gave it to us thinks it may have been hit by lightning.
I have to pull the plug to kill it. I'm one who thinks things either work or not.
Having worked years ago with basic electronics, I know that lightning KILLS!
Any thoughts ?

Hi gregoryd,

I would try opening the case and re seating all power supply connections.

It sounds like the circuitry in the power supply has been damaged in some way. Being a HP product, the power supply is probably proprietary. You can search for the part number on the web. There are many places that sells refurbed or recovered supplies at a fraction of the cost of new.

Other than that, I would use a switched power strip to cut it off with vrs just pulling the plug.

I hope this helps,

Rigel

Thank you Rigelslight.

That's pretty much what we're doing.
I've always been warned about the proprietary nature of HP.
I only realized the extent when I opened it up figuring
I could swap the Pwr/sply for one out of an old PC.
They don't even make that the same size as everyone else.
This could explain why they are laying off thousands of workers.
In business, it's one thing to be different but being unique isn't
always fiscally responsible.

This may be for notebooks only, not sure.... In the Control Panel - under the Power Options. Check the Advanced & Power Scheme (laptops only?) settings...
