I stupidly installed a questionable app I torrented, and now I have what seems to be the ESQUL rootkit virus. I have tried downloading everything from HijackThis to SuperAntiSpyware to Malware Bytes to you name it, but no dice -- the virus either blocks installation, or prevents the .exe from downloading in the first place by saving an empty file to my computer.

I tried Kaspersky's online scanner, but the virus blocks the definition update. It looks like it's blocking anything that requires Java.

I have to run my browser as an administrator or else it won't start.

It's also done something to the backup partition on my hard drive to the point that the system doesn't recognize it. And it's redirecting my Google search results, though at this point that's the least of my worries.

And that's what's going on. I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide. My DDS log is below and attach.zip is attached.

Thank you!

Hello mikeindc,

I stupidly installed a questionable app I torrented, and now I have what seems to be the ESQUL rootkit virus

We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It is the cause of to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. P2P file sharing is used as a major conduit to spread malware.

Warning: while P2P file sharing technology is completely legal, many of the files traded through P2P are copyrighted. Unless you live in Canada where citizens are shielded from P2P copyright lawsuits, downloading music, movie, and TV files will put you at risk for a civil lawsuit in any other country. These lawsuits usually take the form of class-action suits, filed against groups of users who are logged as blatantly copying and distributing copyrighted materials. Recently, the MPAA and RIAA, along with the governments of England and Australia, took several thousand users to court, demanding that they pay thousands of dollars in copyright infringement penalties. Please keep this lawsuit risk in mind when you install and use any P2P software in the USA, Europe, or Asia

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall all P2P software.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
Please post the contents of that document.

Please run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If MBAM will not install, please rename the installer mbam-setup.exe. Example: newtool2.exe
Proceed installing the renamed installer of MBAM.

If MBAM will not run, go to the program directory of MBAM (e.g. C:\Program FIles\Malwarebytes Antimalware\) then rename mbam.exe to newtool.exe3, double click newtool3.exe to proceed in running a Full scan.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire MBAM report (even if it does not find anything) in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please unzip the file you attached attach.zip, and reattach it. It needs to called attach.txt for ease of reading.
