I first noticed a problem with my computer about 6 days ago. It began making clicks like it was opening browser windows and I could here advertisements playing in the background even though no browser windows popped up. I figured out that it was happening in Internet Explorer by going into Task Manager and noticing that it was running. I never use IE and stopped it and the clicks and sounds stopped, but only for a short time. It quickly got worse because I began to poke around in my system and tried to run Spybot but it wouldn't open for me which has never happened before. I then downloaded Spybot Rootalyzer and it found 8 rootkits. The only one that I could find anything bad about online was the one in my Topic Title. I tried deleting it but it won't go away. My virus protection was out of date and I let it lapse because it doesn't let me use Spybot, which was a moot point now, so I downloaded the new version of Trend Micro and installed it but it kept freezing my system every time I tried to open it and do a scan. I finally had to force uninstall it just so I could use my system again. I began to read posts in arenas like this one and figured out that it must be that rootkit I found because so many people were having the same symptoms as I was.

I tried downloading ATF and Super like one of the posts said but my computer wouldn't even install Super until I changed the name of the .exe. Then I could install it, but it registers in my system as Super and so my computer wouldn't let me open and update it. Right now I'm constantly monitoring my system. I use Trend Micro House Call to scan and Windows firewall to protect and I delete my browsing history 10 or 11 times a day. I think I have it temporarily under control, but if I'm going to be able to use my system properly I'm sure it has to start with getting rid of uacinit.dll. Please help.

I'm including my DDS logs. Thanks in advance. And just so you.... you guys rock.

Hello kikinsteve, and welcome to BleepingComputer.com!

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at BleepingComputer.com we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not, please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you do not make a reply witin the next 5 days, we will need to close your topic.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • I will start working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstalling programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running extra scanners or fix programs not requested by me: doing so could change the results in the reports I request.
  • The process is not instant: even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I tell you your machine is clean. Just because a symptom disappears does not mean your system is clean. We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please stop and ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Please set aside enough time to complete all the steps in each post and follow the instructions in the order stated.
  • After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, but please let me know: just post back here so that I know you are still here. This is to ensure that your topic remains open and I don't close it to start a new post.
NOTE: In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this button, a drop-down menu will expand. By choosing Track this topic and then choosing Immediate Email Notification, followed by clicking Proceed, you will be advised when I respond to your topic. This facilitates the cleaning procedure. The topics you are tracking can be found here.
  • Please reply to this thread using the Add Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply.
  • Reviewing your log(s) requires an amount of research, so please be patient. However, if I have not posted back within 24 hours, feel free to send me a Personal Message (PM) with your topic link.

If you still require assistance, please post a new set of logs from DDS and a description of any remaining problems or symptoms you may still have.

If for any reason you did not post a DDS log please refer to this page and in step #6 there are instructions on downloading and running DDS. If you have any problems, just let me know in your next reply or simply post a HijackThis log.

Then, please check for rootkits with RootRepeal:

So for your next reply, I would like to see:
  • the DDS logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt (attached)
  • the RootRepeal report (RootRepeal.txt)
  • a description of any remaining problems
Thanks again and we apologize for the delay.

With kindest regards,

htv8 :thumbup2:

Thanks for your reply to my post. Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but it's because we've been moving to a new house. It will probably be Friday afternoon before I can repost with the necessary info you need to help with my problem as we have to wait for the Cable company to move our internet over to the new place and that won't happen until Friday morning. As soon as they're done I'll shoot that stuff over. Thanks again for your help.

Hey guys,

I'm including the logs you asked for in this post. Also, for your consideration, I've noticed a few new symptoms with my system. The most annoying one is that now when IE opens on it's own, like I mentioned before, if I'm working in another program it will minimize on it's own. Another problem is that I've noticed that my CPU seems to max out on memory and run at 100% just from using simple programs and now when I use Google i always seem to get redirected to other search engines. I'm sure it's all related, but just not sure how. I'm still constantly monitoring my system and that at least allows me to keep it from getting too bogged down. Hope these logs lead you to the answer:

Hello again, kikinsteve.

:thumbup2:The TDSS Trojan Horse is a backdoor/rootkit trojan.:) Such a piece of malware allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

Rootkits and backdoor trojans are very dangerous because they compromise system integrity by making changes that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes. Rootkits are used by Trojans to conceal its presence (hide from view) in order to prevent detection of an attacker's software and make removal more difficult. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. They can disable your antivirus and security tools to prevent detection and removal. Remote attackers use backdoors as a means of accessing and taking control of a computer that bypasses security mechanisms. This type of exploit allows them to steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which is send back to the hacker. To learn more about these types of infections, you can refer to:

I would counsel you to immediately disconnect this PC from the Internet and from your network if it is on a network. Disconnect the infected computer until the computer can be cleaned. Then, access this information from a non-compromised computer to follow the steps needed.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable. Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. (If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control before connecting again.) Banking and credit card institutions should be notified to apprise them of your situation (possible security breach). To protect your information that may have been compromised, I recommend reading these references:

Though the backdoor has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume the computer is secure even if the malware appears to have been removed. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired so you can never be sure that you have completely removed a rootkit. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Tools that claim to be able to remove rootkits cannot guarantee that all traces of it will be removed. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with such a piece of malware, the best course of action would be a reformat and clean reinstall of the OS. This is something I don't like to recommend normally, but in most cases it is the best solution for your safety. Making this decision is based on what the computer is used for, and what information can be accessed from it. For more information, please read these references very carefully:If you choose to format and reinstall, see these link for instructions: Reformatting Windows XP (by wng_z3ro), MIT IS&T - Windows XP: Clean Install. However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so. But please consider carefully before deciding against a reformat. If you do make that decision, I will do my best to help you clean the computer of any infections, but you must understand that once a machine has been taken over by this type of malware, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure even after disinfection or that the removal will be successful.

Please let me know what you have decided to do in your next post. Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

If you decide to go through with the cleanup, you can proceed with the steps below.

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your Desktop, or print them, for easy reference and to make sure you don't get lost.
Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below and do not miss any steps out. If at any point you have questions, or are unsure of the instructions, do not hesitate to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding with the fixes.

:) Peer-to-peer (P2P) program WARNING

Your log shows that you are using a so called peer-to-peer or file sharing program (in your case LimeWire 4.14.10). Programs like this one allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it. It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: File Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer. (P2P) and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and P2P file sharing programs:

  • They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.
  • Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious flash ads that install viruses, trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.
The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications. It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.

Due to the reasons mentioned above, I would strongly recommend that you uninstall LimeWire. The choice to remove it is entirely up to you, however, but I strongly recommend getting rid of it. If you agree, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and remove LimeWire 4.14.10. If you do not agree, please at least refrain from using any peer-to-peer programs for the remainder of my fix.

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organizations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.
Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as OpenOffice.

Download and run sUBs' ComboFix:
  • Please download ComboFix from any of the links below. * IMPORTANT! Choose to save ComboFix to your Desktop but rename it to kikinsteve.exe prior to doing so.
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double-click kikinsteve.exe and follow the prompts. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
NOTE: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once installed, you should see a screen prompt that says: "The Recovery Console was successfully installed.".
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
NOTE: Do NOT mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause your system to hang!
  • When finished, ComboFix shall produce a log for you (located at C:\ComboFix.txt). Post the entire contents of that report in your next reply for further review, along with the Add-Remove Programs.txt log which can be found at C:\Qoobox.

GENERAL WARNING: Do NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your Operating System such as preventing it from ever starting again. Also see ComboFix's disclaimer.

So in your next post, please let me know what you have decided to do. If you decided to go through with the cleanup, please post the entire contents of:
  • C:\ComboFix.txt (the ComboFix log)
  • C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

You've definitely given me some things to think about. I do have some questions that I think will help me make up my mind about which option is best for me:

1. Can you tell how long my system has been infected with this rootkit?
2. How deep into my system has it gotten? For instance, does it only have a port open to monitor my system ( which I think is unlikely ) or does it have complete control even through my firewall?
3. Can you tell if any of my files have been stolen or copied, of if any of my software should be re-installed even if I choose not to completely re-format?

As most people would be, I'm worried about the safety of my personal info, but I expected weeks ago that this was no ordinary virus and so I changed all the passwords to my bank accounts immediately. I even used the computer at the library to do it so I could make sure that the problem didn't originate with a friend's computer. The files that remain on the computer now are relatively harmless and don't contain anymore info than can be found out about me on the internet anyway (I checked).

I can check my accounts by other electronic means and plan to do so for quite awhile. One of the biggest factors for me to consider, however, is that I currently have only one working system as my laptop has hardware problems unrelated to this one. So please, when you send a reply, consider all of these things and be as blunt with me as possible when advising me on a course of action.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello again, kikinsteve.

OK, let me answer your questions. :thumbup2: If you have any further questions, just let me know and I'll try to answer them for you. Don't hesitate to ask.

1. Can you tell how long my system has been infected with this rootkit?

No, I can't tell you exactly. However, as an important characteristic of this infection is that it redirects you when using Google, you likely got infected around the time you got noticing the redirects.

2. How deep into my system has it gotten? For instance, does it only have a port open to monitor my system ( which I think is unlikely ) or does it have complete control even through my firewall?

The TDSS backdoor/rootkit trojan downloads/requests other malicious files from the Internet. It hides itself/runs in the background, also having the potential of giving an attacker full control of the PC. It is capable of opening illicit network connections, but I can't tell you for sure if it actually did or not...

3. Can you tell if any of my files have been stolen or copied, of if any of my software should be re-installed even if I choose not to completely re-format?

No, I'm sorry, but I can't tell you with certainty whether any of your information has been stolen or not.
If you choose not to reformat, I don't think any software has to be reinstalled.

[..] that I currently have only one working system as my laptop has hardware problems unrelated to this one. So please, when you send a reply, consider all of these things and be as blunt with me as possible when advising me on a course of action.

Making the decision whether to reformat or not is based on what the computer is used for. If it's a corporate/office computer, a computer that is used to work from home or a computer containing important sensitive information, I really would consider reformatting and reinstalling. Business factors certainly outweigh technical factors in making the decision as there may be risks and legal liabilities if the computer is not secure. Please read this for more information.

Know that as of today, we can pretty well clean this infection. However, also know that I cannot guarantee that the computer will be 100% secure even after disinfection. Again, the decision is based on what the computer is used for, and as I don't know for what exactly it is used, I cannot make the decision for you.

Also, I noticed that some of my files now produce an error message telling me that they are corrupted and can't be opened. The message tells me to run the Chkdsk utility. I recognize some of the files as being deleted by ComboFix but I'm not sure if all of them are or what the Chkdsk utility is if in fact I really need to run it. Any thoughts?

Hello again.

Still much work to do...

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your Desktop, or print them, for easy reference and to make sure you don't get lost.
Make sure to work through the instructions in the exact order in which they are mentioned below and do not miss any steps out. If at any point you have questions, or are unsure of the instructions, do not hesitate to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding with the fixes.

 Clean out some temporary data with ATF Cleaner:
  • Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under the Main tab (at the top of the screen) - Select Files to Delete, put a checkmark in the checkbox labelled "Select All".
  • Click on the Empty Selected button.

If you use the Mozilla Firefox browser:
  • Click on the Firefox tab at the top and put a checkmark in the checkbox labelled "Select All".
  • Click on the Empty Selected button. NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use the Opera browser:
  • Click on the Opera tab at the top and put a checkmark in the checkbox labelled "Select All".
  • Click on the Empty Selected button. NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click the Exit button on the Main menu to close the program.

For technical support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
:) Determine the status of some important system files by performing online file scans:
  • Make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: How to see hidden files in Windows.
  • Go to VirSCAN.org: http://virscan.org/.
  • When the VirSCAN.org page has finished loading, click the Browse... button at the top and navigate to each of the following files if they are present and click Submit:
    • c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe
      c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
      c:\windows\system32\services.exe
      c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe
NOTE: You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.
  • Be patient as each file will be scanned.
  • Post back the results of each file scan in your next post.

NOTE: In case VirSCAN.org is busy, try the same at Jotti's malware scan (http://virusscan.jotti.org/) or VirusTotal.com (http://www.virustotal.com/).
:thumbup2: Check the integrity of system files:
  • Go to Start -> Run...
  • In the "Open" box that opens, type sfc /scannow
NOTE there is a space between "sfc" and "/scannow"!
  • Press Enter (or click OK).
    • You will see a progress bar but you get no confirmation messages and it just ends.
  • Insert your Windows installation CD when/if requested.
:) Create logs with random's system information tool (RSIT):
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from the link below and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.RSIT will now start its scan.
  • When the scan is complete, two logs will open in Notepad (if not, they both can be found in the C:\rsit folder):
    • log.txt <- will be maximized
    • info.txt <- will be minimized;
please copy (Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the entire contents of both logs in your next reply.
:) Rescan with RootRepeal (see my initial post for instructions) and post its resultant fresh log here for further review.

So in your next reply, please post the entire contents of:
  • the VirSCAN.org online scan results of the files scanned
  • RSIT's log.txt
  • RSIT's info.txt
  • a fresh RootRepeal log
NOTE: Use several posts if necessary to include everything in your reply.

Please know that I will be unavailable to reply tomorrow for most part of the day. After you have posted the logs, I will also need a bit of time to analyze them. I will get back to you as soon as possible with a fix to kill the badies (when I am ready). :)
If I have not posted back within 24 hours, feel free to send me a PM with your topic link.

Okay, somethings really wrong. I got through the first 3 steps without a problem and then when I downloaded RSIT for step 4 it wouldn't run. I thought maybe I got a bad download so I tried again and this time I couldn't even get it to download. It's not the link because I tried using the link from about five other posts at 3 different forum sites and they all produced the same result - a browser tab that just says "untitiled" at the top. But what really worries me is that now this forum page doesn't render on my screen the same anymore. The screen shot is missing colors and the "add reply" screen is totally different from before.

I'm 100% sure that I followed your instructions exactly as given, so I don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?

Hello again, kikinsteve!

Hmm. Don't know exactly what's going on there. Maybe you can make a screenshot (using the Print Screen button) and attach it to your reply?
Also, try cleaning out your temporary data once again using ATF Cleaner (see Step #1 of my previous post for instructions). Delete any copies of rsit.exe that you have saved and try downloading it again. When successfully saved, rename rsit.exe to rs.com (when asked to change extension, choose Yes). Then try running it again (by double-clicking). I don't know if this works, but it's worth a try. Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,

htv8

Okay, I tried ATF and changing the file name with no success. ATF worked fine and I was able to download again but the file still wouldn't open. Subsequent attempts to download it again rendered the same result as before. I also should mention something I forgot before - in order to download it at all I have to turn off my web site protection feature on my Trendmicro. I don't know if that's significant or not but I thought it should be mentioned.

Any way around using RSIT?
