I think I'm infected but I'm not sure by what. I have two symptoms.

1) When using Internet Explorer, sometimes when I click on links I am redirected to obvious adware pages.

2) Anti-Malware type programs are killed within a few seconds of being launched and the permissions are changed to "Everyone" on them. I can change the permissions back to Administrator but then I'm back to the original problem. Programs where this happens include Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Sysinternals Autoruns and ComboFix.

The same happens even if I rename the executable file for the above programs. I am able to launch it once but after a few seconds the program is halted and the permissions are changed.

When I try to run RootRepeal the whole system locks up and I have to reboot. This happens even if I set disk access to high.

I have tried all of the above in SafeMode with the same results.

Also, running a virus scan with Symantec did lead to quarantining some items but it did not change the above symptoms.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

VIPRE PC Rescue. This is a is a command-line utility that will scan and clean a computer which is so badly infected that programs cannot be easily run. Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on the same page.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.
