My computer is infected with a virus very similar to that described in this thread:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/243464/i-cant-remove-my-pc-infections/

I'm a relative novice but reasonably responsive to instructions. I have downloaded HJT and compiled an HJT log and a startuplist (find below), and then followed the instruction to post to this forum.

What should I do next?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
regards,
schrauber

Thanks for your support.

Since my original posting, the persistant popups have stopped but the desktop display remains altered with "critical_warning" still sitting in my desktop properties settings, which I am unable to change. The only other noticeable variation is a warning upon opening the browser that some problem has occurred and asking if I wish to open with my last selection.

Here is the DDS log:

Hello! :thumbup2:
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

In order to see what's going on with your computer I will ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the "Run Scan" button.
  • The scan should take just a few minutes.
  • Copy the log that opens up and paste it back here in your next reply.

Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hi Sam

Thanks so much for your support.

The Malwarebytes' log happened without a hitch BUT my Trend Micro Internet Security Pro won't let me download http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe. I've gone through the process they suggest to allow the download, but it still won't allow it. Maybe I need to disable it, but I'll await your instructions.

Here is the Malwarebytes' log:

Hi Sam

The view of the desktop is almost back to as it was - the only visual difference is that the lables of the icons are highlighted (see attached file).

I am also getting the warning upon opening my browser that the browser had closed unexpectedly -EVEN THOUGH I had closed it carefully the previous session.

Also odd things occur - I was alerted that my Trend Micro A/V was switched off but now I see it is back on!

Otherwise, all seems okay.

Greg

Sounds like just a few bugs to work out. On your desktop icons, there's a setting that you need to adjust. Right click on the desktop and select Properties. I'm not sure exactly what setting it is and I'm on my Vista machine now but poke around a bit and you should be able to figure it out.

I would keep a close eye on the errors that you're getting from IE. If you continue to get those error messages let me know and we'll just take another look around to be sure nothing sneaky going on.

Run an online scan at Secunia Online Software Inspector
  • Click on the red button at the bottom of the screen that says Start Scanner.
  • Follow the prompts to install the scanning software.
  • Do not check the box for Enable thorough system inspection
  • Click the Start button.
  • The program will scan your system and identify insecure versions of software and missing security updates.
  • Using the links provided in the scan, download and install any current and secure versions that are needed.

Also run a scan with Malwarebytes. If it comes up clean, no need to post anything. But if it still finds malware please post the log for me.

Hi Sam

Okay, adjusted the settings and that display problem is fixed. Thanks for that tip.

Ran the Secunia Online Software Inspector which advised that two systems (Adobe Flash 10.0 and 9.0) were insecure - so fixed those.

Also ran another Malwarebytes scan - all clear.

Very many thanks for your timely responses and support.

Greg

Further to the IE start up problem:

It only occurs after restarting the computer and then opening IE. The message reads:
"Your last browsing session closed unexpectedly. Would you like to restore your last session or go to your home page"

The choice "Restore your last session" is prioritised. I have been choosing the other option of going to the home page.

It seems a bit suspicious to me; what do you think?

PS just googled that quoted message and found recent similar complaints. Various remedies are given, but as I alerted you first I will await your response.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

That may resolve the issue, but if not, open IE and go to Tools -> Internet options and select the General tab.
Click on the Delete button in the browsing history section.
Click on Delete All. Click Ok twice to get out of IE options and then close your browser.
Reboot your computer and check to see if the problem is resolved.

Hi Sam

Tried that and it seems to have fixed it.

My Trend Micro A/V has been giving me warnings that "Operating Systems Components" (located in SYSTEM) has been wanting to send data to the internet and I have been blocking it.

I assume that was the correct action.

Thanks again for your patient support.
