This big problem started yesterday. I suspect a virus has brought this on me. Whenever i click on Local Disk D: or E: the message "The disk in Drive D:/E: is not formated,do u want to format it now?" pops up
I click NO each time bcoz i know clicking on YES will make all DATA in these drives lost forever.
I gather from some reading on web that this seems a problem due to corrupting of Partitioning tables, but i would like to follow your advice.

In combination with this above problem 1 more problem exists of Win32/Rootkit.Agent.ODG trojan
I use ESET NOD32 which has been giving the the following detection
8/8/2009 7:51:41 PM Startup scanner operating memory Operating memory Win32/Rootkit.Agent.ODG trojan unable to clean HOME\Rahul

I know it is improper to ask more than 1 problems in query, bcoz u have people specialized in answering each type of problem. But i guess it would be better if you know the overall condition. Also i dont know if i can follow the advise of some of the threads i found containing problems similar to mine but of different configurations.

I have downloaded and run malwarebtyes after updating and removed some detected malware.
C:\Documents and Settings\Rahul\Application Data\taskeng.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Unloaded process successfully.
(I will add more details of scan log if u wish)
However On restart Spybot-SD Resident pick up activity by taskeng.exe, indicating that it might not have been completely cleaned (or source infecting still exists)

Any kind of help is welcome.Thank You.

Please post those(that) MBAM log

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.40) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Please download RootRepeal.zip and save it to your Desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Unzip the file on your Desktop or create a new folder on the hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract it there.
(click here if you're not sure how to do this. Vista users refer to these instructions.)
  • Disconnect from the Internet as your system will be unprotected while using this tool.
  • Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
This will ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.
  • Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them.
  • Open the RootRepeal folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator...
  • Click on the Files tab at the bottom of the window, then click the Scan button.
  • In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select your main drive(usually C), then click OK.
  • When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window.
  • Click on the Save Report button and save it as rootrepeal.txt to your desktop.
  • A copy of the report with the date (i.e. RootRepeal report 07-30-09 (17-35-54).txt) is also saved to the root of your system drive (usually C:\).
  • Open rootrepeal.txt in Notepad and copy/paste its contents in your next reply.
  • Exit RootRepeal and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "safe mode".

Download: http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe

1. Save it to your desktop.
2. Open the file and close any other windows.
3. It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
4. Click the Start button to begin the process.
5. Once it's finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself.

Please download Sophos Anti-rootkit & save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
Note: If using the vendor's download site you will be asked to register with MySophos so an email containing an activation link can be sent to your email address.

Be sure to print out and read the Sophos Anti-Rookit User Manual and Release Notes.
  • Double-click sar_15_sfx.exe to begin the installation, read the license agreement and click Accept.
  • Allow the default location of C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Rootkit and click Install.
  • A message will appear "Sophos Anti-Rootkit was successfully installed. Click 'yes' to start it now".
  • Click Yes and allow the driver and its randomly named .tmp file (i.e. F.tmp) to load if asked.
  • If the scan did not start automatically, make sure the following are checked:
    • Running processes
    • Windows Registry
    • Local Hard Drives
  • Click Start scan.
  • Sophos Anti-Rootkit will scan the selected areas and display any suspicious files in the upper panel.
  • When the scan is complete, a pop-up screen will appear with "Rootkit Scan Results". Click OK to continue.
  • Click on the suspicious file to display more information about it in the lower panel which also includes whether the item is recommended for removal.
    • Files tagged as Removable: No are not marked for removal and cannot be removed.
    • Files tagged as Removable: Yes (clean up recommended) are marked for removal by default.
    • Files tagged as Removable: Yes (but clean up not recommended) are not marked for removal because Sophos did not recognize them. These files will require further investigation.
  • Select only items recommended for removal, then click "Clean up checked items". You will be asked to confirm, click Yes.
  • A pop up window will appear advising the cleanup will finish when you restart your computer. Click Restart Now.
  • After reboot, a dialog box displays the files you selected for removal and the action taken.
  • Click Empty list and then click Continue to re-scan your computer a second time to ensure everything was cleaned.
  • When done, go to Start > Run and type or copy/paste: %temp%\sarscan.log
  • This should open the log from the rootkit scan. Please post this log in your next reply. If you have a problem, you can find sarscan.log in C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\.
Before performing an ARK scan it is recommended to do the following to ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.
  • Disconnect from the Internet or physically unplug you Internet cable connection.
  • Clean out your temporary files.
  • Close all open programs, scheduling/updating tasks and background processes that might activate during the scan including the screensaver.
  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection.
  • After starting the scan, do not use the computer until the scan has completed.
  • When finished, re-enable your anti-virus/anti-malware (or reboot) and then you can reconnect to the Internet.

I performed scan with Sophos Anti-Rookit...but the list of Suspicious files it gave contained none from C: drive....3 registry key marked recommended : No
and
Innumerable no of entries of files from Drives D: and E: containing .jpeg, .mp3, .png, .java, .cpp , .html, .doc almost everything contained in the Drives D: E: previously
I did not find Suspicious file tagged as Removable: Yes (clean up recommended) in them

Just to finish the clean up i selected a .GIF file and clicked Clean up checked items

On reboot...no dialog box appeared indicating the files i had selected for removal and the action taken

As stated sarscan.log in Temp file is too Huge(Literally contains all my files)....so not attaching here..

sarclean.log has following entry :
SophosBootTasks version 1.5.0 initialising
Processing tasks
Reading information for task 0
Deleting file \Device\HarddiskVolume3\soft\java entire\uiswing\examples\components\FileChooserDemo2Project\src\components\images\tiffIcon.gif
Error resetting read only attribute (0xC000014F)
Error opening item for delete (0xC000014F)
ActionBootTasks completed
SophosBootTasks completed

Malwarebytes pops up a Error message at any time(not frequent though) which reads :
[OpenEvent] Failed to perform desired action. Error Code: 2

I found my problem very similar to the problem in this thread
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/243011/rootkittrace-removal/

But there is no solution mentioned....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The more recent thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/246536/trojan-that-i-cannot-remove/ has the problem of

Path: Volume C:\
Status: MBR Rootkit Detected!

Path: Volume C:\, Sector 62
Status: Sector mismatch

with a possible success too......will the same procedure help me?

thanks...

The sophos log showing the system hidden files(not data) is where you find clues about the infection

Rootrepeal might need all your help to run, same with Sophos

Disable all security programs, thoroughly clean temp files

Try safe mode

Infections like this require a lot of effort and vigilance if we are going to win.

Let's try again, first with Rootrepeal, download a fresh copy after deleting the old one

AS Stated : (Start of file truncated because it was too large)
was the message contained in first line of sarscan.log

the scan results of Sophos Anti-Rookit contained none of Hidden: file from C: drive....3 registry key marked Removable : No
and
Innumerable no of entries of files from Drives D: and E: marked Removable: Yes (Not recommended)

I have lost the Log "sarscan.log" after emptying temp files now....

Heres what i did to begin again :

I deleted old RootReapel
I downloaded new RootRepeal
Extracted in C:\RootRepeal
I cleaned my temp files by CCleaner first
Then ran TFC.exe
When the PC restarted,at the point of restart logged myself as Admin in SAFE mode
On starting RootRepeal I got the following error message for a Total of 5 times
Could not read the Boot Sector.Try adjusting the Disk Access Level in the options dialog

The SCAN Log :
ROOTREPEAL AD, 2007-2009
==================================================

Path: Volume C:\
Status: MBR Rootkit Detected!

If i have done anything wrong then plz suggest me...thanks
