My mother-in-law asked me to look at her laptop as it had been "acting weird" and sending her to different websites from Google. I really know nothing about PCs, but I had heard of the Google redirect virus before & thought it may be as simple as running her virus protection to fix the issue. She had Symantec on the computer, but it was out dated and she hadn't actually run it in several years. I installed McAfee and ran it a few times and removed over 40 different trojans & viruses. Then a warning box opened that said "Hl1lI923.exe is attempting to make changes to the host files." I looked at the processes & there were four of these same .exe running so I ended the processes & ran McAfee again, but it didn't find anything. I did a search for the .exe, but couldn't find anything, so I went to Microsoft.com to see if there was any info & saw they had a free system scan "Microsoft One Care Live" & decided to try that. 30 seconds into the install, explorer froze up and then closed. I tried to open explorer but received an error (screen shot attached) stating windows cannot access the specified path. Then I received a TouchED error (screen shot attached) saying "retrieval of the THotkey failed." I was still receiving the windows error when I tried to open explorer, so I removed the "one care Live" program from the computer & restarted, but still received the same error. So I removed iexplorer all together & tried to reinstall the program from a flash drive. It looked like it installed properly, but at the end gave me a window stating that the computer needed to be restarted because there were issues with the install & directed me to follow a link it placed on the desktop "IE Troubleshooting" So I restarted, but when I click on the link, it gives me the same Windows error stating it can't find the path. I then tried to restore the computer, but got an error saying Admin would not allow it in the group. And that's where I'm at now. I can't get it on the internet & I can't figure out what was causing the Google redirect to start with. It's running XP HE ver. 2002 with SP3. Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Lets take a look with Malwarebytes

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here:
Malwarebytes
Please rename the file BEFORE downloading to zztoy.exe instead of mbam-setup.exe

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Double Click zztoy.exe to install the application.
* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire MBAM report (even if it does not find anything) in your next reply

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

If Malwarebytes won't install or run

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run.

Thanks a lot for the assistance and instructions! the program installed and ran without issue. I was SHOCKED at how many issues it found!!! There are 130 items in quarantine! I didn't delete them yet as I wanted to make sure there wasn't a need to keep them around, so I'll wait for the OK from you first on that. Here's the log...

Your very welcome. Yes, Malwarebytes is quite the little scanner. Could you run a Quick scan and post back the log to see if it finds anything?

It blows my mind that McAfee didn't get any of that!?! Like I said, she hadn't had any sort of virus protection going in at least 3 years, and when I installed McAfee it removed over 40 different item itself, but I never would have imagined it would not have found 130 different issues!

I ran a full scan again and it came up with one issue. Here's the log:

Should I go ahead and delete everything, or just leave them in quarantine?

Ok, good. Yes, you can delete all of the files out of quarentine. You definately dont need to keep them.

Next:

Please run ATF and SAS:
Credits to Boopme

Note.. SAS doesn't open the registry hives for other user accounts on the system, so scans should be done from each user account.

Note 2: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

From your regular user account..
Download Attribune's ATF Cleaner and then SUPERAntiSpyware, Free Home Edition

Save both to desktop ..
DO NOT run yet.
Open SUPER from icon and install and Update it
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program. DO NOT run yet.

Now reboot into Safe Mode: How to enter safe mode(XP)
Using the F8 Method
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox or Opera browser click that browser at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

NOW Scan with SUPER
Open from the desktop icon or the program Files list
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
Perform a Complete scan. After scan,Verify they are all checked.
Click OK on the summary screen to quarantine all found items.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log.
A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
Click Close to exit the program.

It won't let me reboot in safe mode! I select safe mode & hit enter & then it asks which operating system & I select XP & it scrolls through & reboots but then gives me a window that says "We appologize for the inconvience, but Windows did not start successfully." It gives me the option to try Safe Mode again or do safe mode with command prompt or networking, but it restarted windows normally after I tried 3 times for safe mode. I let it restart & then shut it down & tried to bring it up in Safe mode again, but get the same results.

Just curious, are these things that I should also do to my computer as preventative maintenance?
