Hello,

I recently came across this annoying trojan horse. It began with random AVG Resident Shield Alerts finding a "Trojan Horse Generic14.QLX", "Trojan Horse Downloader.Small.GEO", and a "Trojan Horse SpamBot.W".

I use AVG, Spybot, and Adaware as protection, and after updating all three and cleaning the infections, the alerts do not show up anymore during a session on my pc. However, the alerts still occur when I initially start up Windows XP. Furthermore, the windows firewall will now disable every time I start up, to which I would have to manually enable it every log in.

Here is the HijackThis Log I have saved:

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Extra note... The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Thank you for your prompt response. Below are the logs you have requested. Note: After restarting my computer when Malwarebyte's requested that I do so to remove an infection, I still received the Trojan Horse Generic 14.QLX alert upon log in, as well as the firewall being disabled.

Hi,

Your HJT log doesn't make sense since whatever mbam removed is still present there. This may because of your adwatch...

I see you are running AdWatch.
I suggest you disable it because it can interfere with the fixes.

To disable AdWatch - * Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select to Disable Adwatch Live.

Then run mbam again and let it remove what it found.
Post the log in your next reply together with a new HJTlog.

I think the problem is fixed. There was a file called Taskeng.exe located in C:\documents and settings\X\local settings\application data. When I would click on that file, the firewall would turn off and the avg alert would trigger. I manually deleted that file, restarted the PC, and now it starts normally.

Now I just have to find the start-up process that would trigger execution of that infected Taskeng.exe.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi,

Not sure if you have noticed, but mbam detects the file as well and deletes it.
I also see you have Teatimer present. This does the same as Adwatch, so no wonder the entry is still present in your log since Teatimer also interferes here.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.
Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Hi,

This looks OK again.

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Uninstalled combofix, ran a pre-cautionary scan with mbam, and no infections!

Thank you very much for your help the past few days, I really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Armen

Glad I could help. :thumbup2:

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
