It seems to me that the shortcut has changed for some reason.
You could try this:
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, and then point to the Microsoft Office program for which you wish to create a desktop shortcut.
Then right click on the name of the program, select Send To, and then click Desktop (create shortcut).

Does this help?

It did not fix the problem. The same doc is loading into word right after you click the icon.

Sorry to hear it didn't work.

May I ask what kind of Word document it is? Is it one that you have created? If there has been a problem shutting off your Word while working on a document, it might try to restore the document when Word is loaded again.
Or is it a suspicious/strange document?

Sorry for delay, I was on vacation.

It is a standard text word doc that she created several weeks ago.

You said - it might try to restore the document when Word is loaded again. Ok - if that is the problem, how do you fix iyt?

You can try this -

click the shortcut
right click
choose properties
select the shortcut tab
then paste this

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office

then click OK...

Did not work.
I have spent days looking for any file that looked strange. I found one that brought up the memo that keeps popping up - ready - y with 2 dots over it, than a 9, followed by a y with 2 dots over it, than a 9.doc - the file shows 0 KB. I deleted it. Guess what - clicking the word icon brought the old memo back to life. But - when I looked for the file, it was gone.
If I click the winword icon in the office program it also brings up the memo.
In hind sight I wish I had changed the file extension instead of deleting the file.
I learned that she was trying to setup a template at that time but when I checked all the word add-ins it showed none.
When I checked the most recent doc file, it said file could not found.
Ok ER- your turn (:-

Some time ago, I had a problem with wordpad loading at boot and it turned out to be a problem in the registry. This could be something similar but I have not found anything to date.

I have seen this once before. Try renaming the normal.dot file, the is the file Word uses to work with templates and Word will recreate it the next time you start Word.
I finally got it all together, now if I could just remember where I put it.

I have found several normal files but not one with a .dot extension. Changed the ext on the file in safe mode but it still came back when opening word. I could not change ext in regular mode because it said file was in use. I deleted the file but it still came back.

normal.dot should be in \Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

I can not find the normal.dot file in MS Office 2007. There is no application file in the file sequence you sent on the PC and none in the template file itself. A search also shows no such file.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that Application Data is a hidden folder, so you may have to show hidden folders.
