I have XP Pro on a Compaq Presario CQ50-215NR notebook. Recently, on shutting down, it automatically wants to install a new update. I let this go on for a few days thinking that Microsoft were releasing a slew of upgrades. However, when I checked under control panel there has not been any updates installed since 7/15/09 but it keeps going through the motions of installing an update each time I close it down. Does anyone know why it keeps doing this ?

Well, let's take a look .

The last 3 critical updates I show in Add/Remove (I just updated a few minutes ago) reflect KB961371...KB971633...KB973346. There were two additional updates, one of which was the Malicious Software Tool...but neither of these show up in A/RP.

What are the last 3 that show on your system in A/RP?

I suspect that something did not install properly...which may be why the repetitive attempt occurs.

One other thing that I suggest...is a manual visit to Windows Updates. Something may be wrong with the automatic download/install feature of XP, but a trip to Windows Update site will reveal if you are missing any critical updates.

Hi Louis,

Thanks for your response. The last 3 updates which show up in mt A/RP are exactly the same as yours. I will follow your advice and see if I am missing any critical updates.

Hi Louis,

When I looked a little deeper I found that KB954430 had not installed correctly. I cleaned it out and reinstalled it and all is well. Thanks for helping me out.
