Hello, this is my first time battling a virus. I'm not sure what it is, but I believe it's a Trojan horse or rootkit of some kind.

Symptoms: Search engine searches are redirected to ad sites, and anti-virus software doesn't run until I rename it. My computer also doesn't resume windows after hibernation (I have to shut it down and start it up again).

Anti-virus scans referred to some of the things it found as 'ESQUL.sys', 'ESQUL.dll', etc. These were lurking in my registry and my anti-virus was unable to remove them.

I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC; my OS is Vista.

Any help at all would be highly appreciated!

Thanks,
-Kaz

UPDATE: Firefox won't start anymore; I'm using IE for the time being :[

Hello Kazikalani,

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
Please post the contents of that document.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti...&tag=button
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire MBAM report (even if it does not find anything) in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
    [field name="Additional Instructions" lines=20]
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Spywarehammer -- I started out with a single post here, but after about a week I 'lost hope' and posted there. I haven't been to any other forums.

I'm sorry if this compromises your (or anybody else's) ability to help my computer. . . .

I am closing this post since you are receiving help from PCBruiser at Spywarehammer
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesfor...mp;topic=4499.0

Double posting is greatly frowned on by all Malware Removal forums as it wastes our time and creates back logs.
