Hello BleepingComputer.com,

First of all, I would like to precise that English is my 3rd language, so if anything doesn't make sense in my post, just ask for clarification because it might just be a badly formulated sentence. :thumbup2: So here's my problem:

Today, a new virus has been affecting my computer: the Google links (results of a search) are most often being redirected to different websites. The only way to get to the desired link is to return back and click the link until it works. I've been looking through a few websites to find a solution, and I found out that it requires the use of HijackThis (which is how I found these forums).

I've already tried to scan my computer using Avast! (the free version) and Symantec Antivirus. They've found a few threats which were successfully removed or quarantined, but the problem subsists. I have also cleaned my computer using CCleaner, and I don't remember if I've already used Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (I have an incredibad memory ^^'). I've downloaded SpyHunter from a French website, but couldn't do anything with it because you need to purchase the full version...

I hope I didn't make the problem worse by trying to solve it on my own. If you need any specifications, just ask. Here's the DDS.txt log:

Hello SSYC,

Posted Image

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! :thumbup2:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Please do this:
1. Download HijackThis™ here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/th.../hijackthis.php

2. Click 'Do a System Scan and Save log'.
The HJT log will open in notepad.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello,

You're welcome. :thumbup2: How is it running now please?

Microsoft AntiSpyware is VERY outdated and should be uninstalled/removed from your computer.

Also, you should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running 2 Anti Virus programs. (Avast! and Norton) When you do this both programs compete for resources, and the end result is neither does it's best and can cause system instability. I recommend that you choose the one you want to keep, update it, disable or uninstall the other one, and use it as an on demand only scan occasionally.

Wow! Google is fine now and I didn't even notice! :thumbup2: I didn't think it would be so fast (considering the length of the thread of some other similar problems ^^).

Also, I removed Microsoft Antispyware and unloaded Symantec Antivirus as you recommended. Should I have disabled Avast instead?

Anyway, thank you very much for your help and advices :)

Hello,

You're welcome. :thumbup2:

I think you made the right decision on the AntiVirus. :) Your system is probably even faster now without it. :)

One more scan, please. You might like this as a replacement for the old MAS :

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

We should be done after this.

Thanks,
tea

Hi teacup61!

I'm sorry for the delay, I was away for a few days.

Here is the MBAM log (I don't know why it's in French, since I chose English during the installation :S):

Hello.

Teacup is currently unavailable so I will continue to help you here.

I need to see an update of the condition of your system so please do the following:

Download and run DDS

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:

Hello.

You had a very nasty infection on board. Combofix removed most of it however, you still need to know what infection you had and act accordingly.

Rootkits and backdoor Trojans are very dangerous because they use advanced techniques (backdoors) as a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information which they send back to the hacker. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans and rootkits as part of an exploit to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge.

All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. You should change each password by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control before connect again. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Because your computer was compromised please read How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Although the rootkit has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because this malware has been removed the computer is now secure. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read:Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will do our best to help clean the computer of any infections but we cannot guarantee it to be trustworthy or that the removal will be successful. Tell me what you want to do.

If you wish to continue update Java and run an online scan and see what may still be left.

Update Java to Version 6 Update 16

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 16.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Hi extremeboy,

I'm extremely sorry for not having answered earlier.

As for your initial post, I have chosen not to reformat, because of various reasons. I followed the first steps of your post, but I didn't finish yet (I didn't have time those last days).

I will post my scan results as fast as I can, which should be tomorrow, if not, Saturday.

Thank you for your help and patience.

Hi extremeboy,

I've successfully updated my Java, but I had a few problems with the ESET online scan part.

On my first try, the scan was at about 78% complete, and it got stuck there (or at least, I thought it had stopped). The percentage didn't change at all for a few dozen minutes, so I decided to stop the scan. At that moment, I remember 2 infected files were found, one being something like "some form of a win32/ (something) trojan" (it wasn't exactly like that though) and I dont remember the other one (it didn't have text, just a file location... I can't remember).

Somehow, I didn't see any "export to text file" button, so I just decided (without looking harder... I was in a hurry :S) to rerun the scan so I can have a 100% scan. On my second try, the scan was completed entirely and the result was "No threat found". I didn't get a "list of threats found" button. There was only a "manage quarantine" but no "export to text file".

As a result, I don't have any report to give you now, and I'm pretty ashamed of myself for not finding a "export to text file" button on my 1st unfinished scan...

Anyway, here is a screenshot of the items in the "manage quarantine" section, maybe it's important:

Note that I'm sure they are not the threats found during the 1st scan.

I hope my mistakes did not compromise the process too much...

Hello.

Take a new DDS run afterward and post back with both the DDS and Attach logs in your next reply. Also, let me know how your computer is running and if you have any more problems, issues or symptoms left.

Thanks.
