I'm new to the forum, but I'm having a similar problem, only I caused it by stupidly connecting an older Logitech QuickCam to a USB port. I've reviewed my device manager and have found the following problems:
-Question mark on Logitech Driver Interface (3 items under main DriverInterface)
-Exclamation point under Non-Plug and Play Drivers parport
-Exclamation points under all Sound, video and game controller items (all audio related)

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, updating drivers, etc. Nothing works. Whenever I try to update the drivers, I always get the same message that the current driver is the best choice. I also don't have the option of restoring my system because at some point the system restore info got corrupted (probably due to an auto chkdsk at startup, which moved all system files). I have since fixed the system restore and updated to sp3, which restored the location of system files, but can't go back to an older restore point. I really would hate to have to rebuild the system, but will if absolutely necessary.

The system is Windows XP Professional SP3 with EVGA motherboard (have already tried using my motherboard drivers to fix problem). I suspect that the problem is in the registry, but not sure how I can fix it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

The following is an excerpt from my system resources printout:

OK. I'm back to report that I've partially fixed the problem. By the way, I learned that I don't have to worry about the parport or Logitech Driver Interface entries. Microsoft provides parport in case parallel ports are still in use, but if they aren't then there will be an exclamation point next to parport. The Logitech keyboard and mouse are the Logitech Driver Interface entries and can usually be ignored.

Other than that, here is what I did to get where I am now:

-Since it seemed the problem was when I plugged in the QuickCam 400 before installing its drivers, I decided to go all the way and install the drivers for it. Then I plugged in the camera. The camera works just fine now.
-Next, I uninstalled the Realtek HD Audio and ATI Function Driver for HD Audio ATIAA01 drivers through Device Manager without rebooting.
-Uninstalled Realtek software through Add or Remove Programs - received error message that not all drivers could be uninstalled, but expected that (you could try the reverse and uninstall everything through Add or Remove Programs, but didn't seem to matter).
-Rebooted computer.
-Went into BIOS peripherals menu and disabled HD Audio, saved and then booted into Windows.
-Windows no longer detected onboard HD audio, but did detect ATI Function Driver and it installed existing driver.
-I then installed the original Realtek HD audio driver that came with motherboard. When installation was finished, the program prompted me to restart or close and restart later. I chose to restart, and as Windows was shutting down I heard sound come out of my speakers (still plugged in and turned on).
-Computer/system rebooted and both Realtek HD Audio and ATI Function Driver for HD Audio ATIAA01 drivers appeared in Device Manager without errors, but still no sound from speakers.
-Checked volume, got error message "no active mixer devices available".
-Checked services.msc and saw that Windows audio service was already started, but tried to restart, then stop and start. Still no sound.
-Checked sound drivers again and saw message "driver is enabled but not started" under properties, which of course relates back to Windows audio services.

I have since tried to uninstall/reinstall the audio drivers again, but did not help. I'm considering removing the Logitech camera drivers, then uninstalling audio drivers and disabling HD Audio, restarting, and then reinstalling everything except the Logitech camera--hoping to clear out registry entries. If anyone has any suggestions up to this point, I'm all ears!

Thanks.
