Hi all. I found this site when trying to fix Firefox which seemed to no longer block pop-ups and such. I ran an adaware scan and had stuff to delete for the first time since I got firefox (without using I.E. The occasional time I had to use I.E. I had a couple things to delete). I have spybot search and destroy as well, but it has never worked on this computer. I've uninstalled and redownloaded it and reinstalled it, but everytime it goes to fix the problems it finds, it freezes and stops responding. Somtimes I can ctrl-alt-del kill it, other times I have to do a hard reboot of my computer! Sigh. Well, I thought once I got the Mozilla stuff I was alright, but now I"ve got more problems and I'm finding all sorts of bad things on my puter! I am also currently not running an antivirus software because the one that came with my computer was going to charge me a monthly fee to keep using it! (not just a fee for updates, but a monthly "protection fee"). I know there are some free ones out there that I should look into. I ran a hijack this, but am hoping to go to the forum where I can learn what to delete and what not to.

O.k., so thats why I'm here, but I bet you want to know who I am. My name is Emily, I live in Iowa, and I work in a pet store. I've got about 11 fish tanks (filled mostly with fish and snails (I breed applesnails), and an aquatic frog). I also have a cat and a leopard tortoise. In a previous life of mine, I was a computer science major in college. After abandoning that life, I graduated from another college with a math degree and a teching endorsement. I didn't even last a year in the classroom! I like working with pets better. Although, pet parents can sometimes be as bad as students parents! Well, thats me in a nutshell.

Emily, no browser is going to ever replace a resident firewall and anti-virus. You need to immediately download install and update both to protect your PC. Some free alternatives are found here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/Fre...apps-t3616.html

I use AVG and Sygate, as well as serveral anti-adware applications for extra layers of security.
Once you have these protective devices running, and our team of volunteers have helped you clean your computer of malware, then it would be time to uninstall the older version of FF and install the latest (1.05), with a reasonable expectation you can keep your computer safe.

Welcome to BC!
Regards,
John

 to BC! firefly.
Yes John is right, not a single browser can protect you. I'd recomend using Good Luck,

Thanks for the welcomes! I didn't intend my first paragraph on Why I was here to be longer than my intro. Ah, well. ANyways, I just wanted to let you know that I did install the free virus scanner you all mentioned, and boy did it find some things! I'll look into firewall too. (It hadn't been that long since my free trial ended, but long enough I guess). ANd, now I'll take all virus/etc. talk to another subject on here!
