Hello, and may I first say this is the most attractive and well-organised forum I have ever posted on!

My computer was recently infected with Taquito.exe, either from a USB drive that was used in a friends' computer (who has long-expired virus protection) or when I accidentally clicked the bar to display pictures on a very suspicious-looking junk e-mail. I noticed it when on startup one time, a window similar to that when opening a file in the recycle bin appeared spontaneously, giving me the options 'OK', 'Restore' and 'Cancel', if I remember rightly (not sure about OK) which recurred every time on startup. I always selected 'Cancel' to close the window.

On searching 'Taquito.exe' on the Internet, I found the best way to remove this worm is to use HijackThis (which I find to be an excellent program) to identify it and to send the logs to someone who knows what to do with them, but I decided to do it myself and simply used the 'Fix Checked' button to remove the line with the word 'Taquito' in it (should I not have done this?).

After doing this I restarted the computer, and the Taquito window did not appear. I ran HijackThis again and this time it did not show the line containing Taquito. My question is does this mean it is fully removed? My research on this worm lead me to believe its' removal would be a lot more complicated than this, so I came to this forum for confirmation (maybe I should have come here first...). I hope I have not done any permanent damage as HijackThis gave me some fairly ominous-looking warnings about fixing stuff yourself.

P.S. I am quite surprised and alarmed that this malware has been in existence for so long (I have seen people posting on this topic as far back as November 2008) and there has seemingly been no update to major AV software (I have Norton Internet Security) to detect and remove it! Or at least a widely-disseminated removal plan for the layman (like me) so it can be removed manually. I am worried by this because from what I have been reading, 'Taquito.exe' seems like a very malignant malware program, capable of providing a gateway for other malware programs to infect the computer, and sending personal information such as bank details to a remote computer. I think the AV software companies need to get their skates on and find a way to deal with this dangerous program ASAP!

P.P.S. I'm sure there was something else I wanted to say, I just can't think of it now.
Edit: Thought of it; I just wanted to mention I do Internet banking on this computer.

Looking forward to your replies!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer. Most likely you have not removed the infection by just doing that.

Please subscribe to your topic so that you will be notified as soon as I post a reply, instead of you having to check the topic all of the time. This will allow you to get an email notification when I reply.

To subscribe, go to your topic, and at the top right hand corner by your first post, click the Options button and then click Track this topic. The bullet the immediate notification bubble. Then press submit.

Lets take a look with Malwarebytes

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here:
Malwarebytes
Please rename the file BEFORE downloading to zztoy.exe instead of mbam-setup.exe

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Double Click zztoy.exe to install the application.
* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire MBAM report (even if it does not find anything) in your next reply

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

If Malwarebytes won't install or run

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run.

Hi Computer Pro, thanks for your reply. I would like to mention a few points that may be important first. Windows Defender has been turned off since last Christmas without my knowledge or any warning messages appearing. I turned it back on and did a full system scan, which detected nothing. Also when I restarted the computer as part of the MBAM disinfection, Windows Defender was switched off again, a fact which the computer did not warn me of. Also, Windows Firewall has been switched off and is replaced by Norton Smart Firewall.

Here is the MBAM report:

2 questions: If the USB drive was the source of the infection, will plugging it in just reinstall the software once it is removed?
I noticed the MBAM scan detected backdoorbots. From by reading on these it seems a computer infected with them may never be secure again. Does this mean I will never be able to use this computer for Internet banking again?

I am sorry but for your second question at the bottom, i have to say this, as what you said is true:

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

Ok let's answer those very good questions

Norton's is probably turning off Defender to stop it from conflicting with a duplicate layer of protection, if you continue with Norton's I would just uninstall Defender.

Yes, you can reinfect by just plugging in the usb drives. Holding the shift key down when they are first connected will keep the infection from executing thru an autorun.inf.

Immunizing the computer with sUBS flash disinfector will help

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

After doing this scan the usb drive with Norton's

Thanks for your replies. I will try to avoid a reinstallation of the OS if possible.
Does the presence of this infection mean it is certain that this I will never safely be able to do Internet banking on this computer again, even if the infection is completely cleared? And does this apply to other things that require the use of passwords, etc. on the Internet?
What I mean is is it safe to use this computer for other online activities except Internet banking that involve sensitive information? Or is it now unsafe to use this computer on the Internet at all without an OS reinstallation? If this is the case, I will reinstall the OS because I can do the Internet banking on another computer, but there are loads of other things I need this computer for.

The link to 'How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud' you provided me with Computer Pro, is quite alarming. Are you saying it is certain one or more of these details has been stolen? I have done Internet banking since the 'Taquito' window first appeared (I think) but ceased immediately when I learned the nature of the worm.

It is only a possiblility that the rootkit will still be present after the cleaning. It may be and it may not be. But there is never a way to know. Yes, it can apply to all password protected accounts on the internet, but like i said earlier, changing your passwords for them is probably the best prevention of getting the information stolen.

It is not certain that one of the details has been stolen, but like I said above, it is a possibility.

Sorry I took so long to get back. Just a few final questions:

Does the fact that the computer is now clean mean that if information has not been stolen, it now cannot be? Or does the backdoor funtionality mean it can be retrieved any time from now on?
If this is the case, if I change all my passwords, etc. on a clean computer can I then use them safely on this one?

Thanks so much for the help everyone, sorry I keep bugging you with all these questions!

It's fine, ask all of the questions that you need to. Since the computer is now clean, and no information has been stolen already, then it probably will not be. Just make sure to keep a watch on your financial documents and such.

Like I said before, you may not be able to trust it again, but if nothing has happened yet, i Doubt it would happen.

And since you are now clean:

8. Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy
Create a new Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
Click "Ok"
Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
Click the "More Options" Tab.
Click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
Click Yes, then click Ok.
Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

Done and done! One final bit of paranoia (since it was paranoia that made me decide to post here in the first place!) since rootkits are involved I downloaded RootRepeal and I scanned the computer under all tabs. It returned a huge amount of results under 'Files' that were mostly 'Locked to the Windows API!' with some 'Allocation size mismatch'. Also, under 'SSDT' I got 43 Hooked entries, most of which are in an unknown module, and 15 Hooked entries under 'Shadow SSDT', also mostly from unknown modules. I suppose these results are normal, just making a point of it JUST IN CASE they're not.
If this does turn out to be something I will post the log.

I dont think it's anything, but please run a File scan with RR and post back the log to make sure that everything is clear
