Have you run the appropriate hard drive diagnostic...on the drive?

My 160GB drives were made 5 years ago...that's a long time to expect no problems.

Why don't you first try restoring from that one restore point you have. If that doesn't work, then:

1) Go to startmenu / run / type 'services.msc' (without the quotes)

2) In the new window, find the following services and start them and also set each ones's startup type to automatic: COM+ Event System, COM+ system application, Application layer gateway service, DCOM service process launcher, Remote procedure call, shell hardware detection, logical disk manager, logical disk manager administrative service.

3) Make sure all of these services' startup type is set to 'Automatic' and have started. You can do that by right-clicking each service and selecting 'Properties'. The problems in your computer mostly seems to be related to services and therefore these instructions should help.
