Posted 30 July 2009 - 10:48 PM

Three days ago, my system went haywire. The initial symptom was my screen freezing up (horizontal, multicolored lines...I could still see the cursor, but couldn't move it). Every time I restarted my computer, it would eventually do the same thing. Prior to the freeze-up, I would receive various notifications from Windows saying that one or several programs had stopped working, but it was rarely if ever the same program twice (two that I remember were: consent.exe and Microsoft Software Licensing Service). So far, there have been no freeze-ups while operating in safe mode, although programs continue to stop responding.

Also, any program I was actively running, such as Firefox, WMP, Windows Explorer, etc., would often stop working. I was able to install the latest version of Firefox, but it eventually stopped working altogether (I would try to open it and literally nothing would happen--didn't even show up as an active process on Task Manager or my Codestuff Starter app.).

I tried to download Trend Micro's virus scanner and Kaspersky's, but could not do so, I believe because the Windows installer program stopped working.

When I reboot, Microsoft security center says either that McAfee is not communicating to the security center in a compatible mode or that McAfee is turned off. I tried to run a virus scan with McAfee but the program stopped responding. I tried again, and McAfee said "Required DAT files missing; please reinstall." I ran McAfee in safe mode and, after one failure, it completed a full system scan of my local drives, finding no infections. I tried to scan my processes twice, but McAfee stopped responding both times.

(Not in safe mode) I tried to uninstall a couple of Apple programs, and I got a pop up saying my administrator had disabled this function and I had no permission to do the uninstall...I am the administrator and only user of this computer.

I ran Spybot, which found no infections. I defragmented my hard drive. I used the memory check diagnostic and found no problems. I spent an hour on the phone with Toshiba support, and the tech found no hardware problems (his advice was to do a system recoverl, which I thought was premature). I did a system restore, which did not help the problem. The Toshiba tech asked me about my fan, which I thought was a little odd, but I told him I hadn't noticed anything unusual (not that that means anything), and he didn't elaborate.

I tried to follow the instructions in the Prep Guide, but I could not download DDS (said my operating system did not support it). I found another thread which advised I should download RSIT. My log is pasted below, and I have attached the info.txt file.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi, and thanks for the reply.

My problem continued to get worse, and I eventually decided to do a system recovery. Unfortunately, the recovery program also failed during installation, and when I restarted the boot manager wouldn't run. Toshiba tech support told me I had a bad hard drive, and I took it to a computer repair place to be serviced (where it is right now).

I know there's nothing much you can help me with at this point, but I would be interested in knowing whether the hard drive crash could have been caused by some kind of malware.

Regardless, one good thing came out of this, and that is my finding this forum and the wealth of helpful information/advice available. What a resource! Y'all are really performing a great service here, and tech-challenged people like myself appreciate it.

Hi Proser,

I took it to a computer repair place to be serviced

That's a good decision to make. Hope everythig goes well. If you need continued support, then detail the problem you're experiencing.

Good luck! :thumbup2:
