Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

This fake security suite seems to pop up almost immediately upon trying to access information on the web and takes me to fake websites that are clearly not where I intend to link when I enter a search term in Google (or other search sites). I tried to eliminate it using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but to no avail. It does seem less frequent, but not gone.

Let me know what other information you need.

Here are the logs that I believe I'm to provide:

Hello! :thumbup2:
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

In order to see what's going on with your computer I'll ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process.

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the "Run Scan" button.
  • The scan should take just a few minutes.
  • Copy the log that opens up and paste it back here in your next reply.

Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hi Sam,

Thank you for the help! I'm Mark, and I'm working with my father's computer (he's 82 and uses the PC almost exclusively for email and web browsing), but I'll be the one interfacing with you. I'm not overly tech (or PC) savvy, but should be able to get done whatever you instruct to have done.

Here's the scan cut and pasted to this message. Thanks again and look forward to the next step.

Regards,

Mark

Nice to meet you Mark! :thumbup2:

That log is looking pretty good to me. Let's take a closer look with Combofix.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Important!
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an Malware Removal Expert, not for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Make sure that you save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

No, you did fine. I prefer the logs to be pasted directly into the post just like you did. Much easier to review that way. :thumbup2:

The log looks pretty good to me. Although you really need to get an antivirus installed on that machine. There's an excellent free version of AVG that you can download and install from here.

How is the computer behaving now? What issues still remain?

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the help ... it seems we're making progress, but not out of the woods.

I tried to install Comodo AV and Firewall, but it seems to be having problems and somehow being blocked. I'll try AVG and let you know if it loads and works properly. Unfortunately, it seems my access to website addresses (entered directly or after clicking on a link in Google) is limited and the normal function of a web address is not acting properly.

For example, in my Google toolbar I entered the search term "cars" ... the top search link took me to a tab where the title switched to a page where the tab's title was http://prowebsecurity.com then took me to "E-Deal-Shopping.com", so it seems I'm still "hijacked". If I then click the "Back" button, it takes me to the correct "cars" site, wich is "cars.com".

I can try to explain it further, but let me know if that makes sense.

I'll load AVG (I use it on my home PC) and will scan and report.

Let me know if I need to do anything else at this time.

Thanks,

Mark

I ran AVG and still having redirect problems during web searches. I see that a program "pops up" then "disappears" ... its name is prowebsecurity.com ... I think that will help narrow things down a bit.
Thanks again for all the help.
p.s. did a quick search on that on this site, but didn't find anything (though I didn't look very deeply).
Mark

Ok, let's see what we can turn up.

Please update Malwarebytes and run a full scan.
  • Open Malwarebytes and select the Update tab.
  • Click on the Check for Updates button and allow the program to download the latest updates.
  • Once you have the latest updates, select the Scanner tab.
  • Select "Perform full scan" and click the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

And also run Combofix once again and post the resulting log.

You do have a few suspicious files that show up in your log, but I'd like to get some confirmation before we move them.

Please visit the online Jotti Virus Scanner
  • Click on Browse button.
  • Navigate to the following file and upload it.

    c:\windows\system32\dllcache\printfilterpipelinesvc.exe

  • Click on the Posted Image button.
The scanner will check the file with various AV companies.
  • Copy and paste the results box into a reply to this thread.

If Jotti's too busy, try here:
Go here: http://www.virustotal.com/en/virustotalf.html

Also submit these files to the scanner as well.

c:\windows\system32\dllcache\filterpipelineprintproc.dll
c:\windows\system32\xpsshhdr.dll
c:\windows\system32\xpssvcs.dll
c:\windows\system32\prntvpt.dll

Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!
