OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. Machine: Toshiba Satellite 5150 notebook with Intel Dual-Core T2250 @ 1.73GHz, 4GB RAM, Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset family. Configuration: Used for at-home transcription (i.e. few high-speed applications), using two monitors (the notebook monitor, plus an additional flatscreen slaved to the video-out port), a gadget bar with CPU usage, temperature and time, and McAfee, network status, volume, date/time and printer running on the task bar. Problem: After allowing the computer to go into screensaver-mode (displays photos my family have taken), particularly if left for more than an hour, when attempting to resume use of the computer, it locks up. If given 5-10 minutes, it may make it back to the log-in screen, but typically it requires a cold-start. In those instances when I've waited the 5-10 minutes for the machine to respond, I've noticed that the CPU usage meter shows that both cores are pegged at the 100-percent mark while the computer has been in screen-saver mode. The RAM never goes over 50-percent. Something is obviously running the background while the machine is in screen-saver mode, but I don't know how to determine what it is, or how to deconflict whatever is causing the problem. Previously, on an XP machine in another life, I had this sort of issue, and it was caused by a conflict between McAfee and the Windows-based anti-virus software (they didn't get along, apparently). Disabling one resolved it issue. As such, I've had Windows Defender disabled for some time now while McAfee continues to run. However, this obviously isn't the problem, because the computer is still having some sort of conflict/hang-up. I've used MSCONFIG to modify my start-up programs, but when looking at Services to see what's running, I can't tell what should or shouldn't be there (aside from the Microsoft OS components, of course). I typically conduct maintenance on my computer weekly (disk clean-up, defrag, etc.), so I don't think this is part of the problem. Any ideas/suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks very much.

Try a Windows OEM screen saver and see if it does the same thing

To see what's running in the backround:

Under file and save as, create a log and post here

Okay, it's been a week and the OE screensaver seems to have dramatically helped the freeze-up issue I was encountering when the computer went into screensaver-mode. However, I've still got something running in the background that is still causing problems (slow performance, applications not responding, both cores pegged at 100-percent, etc.). The problem is intermittent, and I can't seem to reproduce it by initiating a particular application, or anything. I'm hoping that the logs I posted will lend some insight. Have you had any time to review them? Thanks again for your time and assistance.

The only difference I see in the logs is the second one ,which you say is when it's running poorly, is your AV appears to be in use

Maybe posting in our Am I Infected forum and running some scans might show something

 Okay, thanks for looking those logs over for me. I'm happy to try the "Am I Infected" forum, but I'm wondering if there's a way to move this current Q&A string over there w/o having to retype everything. Is this possible/appropriate? Thanks very much.
